A guide to buying pet Insurance for your German Shepherd

News

This is a guide on buying pet insurance for your German Shepherd. We are not affiliated with any particular company and all our star ratings are algorithmic based, letting the pet insurance market dictate the levels, without human bias.

Each Pet Insurer is also carefully reviewed and it is these two factors along with price, and our comprehensive database, that we use to reveal which are the best pet insurance policies for your German Shepherd.

As consumers, you need to understand a bit about your pet and how these factors such as, their age, health conditions, personality, whether your dog is just a pet or a working dog, purchase cost and where you live can effect the type of policy and level of cover you choose.

To answer these questions we need to understand a bit about the breed itself.

Overview of the German Shepherd

There is a definite need for obedience training of the German Shepherd Dog as a puppy, so that as a strong adult, it does not pull on the lead and follows commands. The German Shepherd Dog was bred as a working dog and works as a support dog in many police forces as well as the Army.

Their intelligence and sensitivity makes them suitable for a range of working applications. Sadly, the breed has often suffered from bad press as the German Shepherd Dog became popular, often with those seeking a strong man image.

The breed needs responsible and intelligent owners who can harness the German Shepherd Dog’s intelligence and activity. A well-trained German Shepherd Dog makes a good family companion. They are powerful and strong, so need a competent and dedicated owner and extensive socialisation.

How much does pet insurance cost for a German Shepherd?
German Shepherd Dogs are good natured and ready for adventure; they are ideal for dog owners who want a large breed of dog and have the time to train this strong intelligent dog. Not suitable for first time dog owners.

The History of German Shepherd dogs

The German Shepherd Dog breed originated in Germany in the 1850s

The dogs were bred to preserve traits that helped in their job of herding sheep and protecting flocks from predators. In local communities, shepherds selected and bred dogs they thought had the skills necessary for herding sheep, such as intelligence, speed, and strength. Resulting in dogs that were able to do this, but that differed significantly, both in appearance and ability, from one locality to another.

In 1899 Von Stephanitz founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (Society for the German Shepherd Dog). Horand was declared to be the first German Shepherd Dog and was the first dog added to the society’s breed register and the breed was recognised by the UK Kennel Club in 1919.

World War I saw a demand for police dogs, which led to a revival of interest in the German Shepherd. During the First and Second World Wars, German Shepherd worked in several roles as search, ambulance, and guard dogs.

In the 21st century the German Shepherd has been used by the armed forces, security guards, and by the police, and is now popular as a family pet.

Is German Shepherd Pet insurance worth it?

The German Shepherd Dog are large dogs. Males generally reach a height of 61- 69 CM and weigh around 50-60 Kg. Females are normally a bit smaller reaching a height of between 56-63 CM and weigh around 35-48 Kg. The German Shepherd Dog is a purebred dog and as with similar lines may encounter breed related health issues.

Vets fees cover is the most important part of any Pet Insurance policy, so to decide whether or not pet insurance is worth it, let's look at some of the potential medical costs you may face, if you decide not to insure your German Shepherd.

It is an unfortunate fact that German Shepherds do have a range of health issues. This is due to the way that they have been bred over the years and is a good reason for taking out insurance as serious problems for your German Shepherd can end up being costly to you.

The Kennel Club class German Shepherds as a category three, the highest category for health concerns. This is down to their conformation and the fact that they have been bred to look a certain way, for example the shape of their back legs and hips.

Common health problems in some German Shepherd include:

Hip dysplasia – A heritable condition where the thighbone doesn’t fit perfectly into the hip joint. The condition may show in one or both of a dog’s rear legs, but in many cases, you may not notice signs of any problems. As dogs get older, this problem can eventually lead to arthritis. Surgery to replace a dogs hip can cost up to £4,500.

Elbow dysplasia – Also a heritable condition, more associated with larger breed dogs. Where different growth rates of bones in the elbow cause them to become misaligned, which can lead to cartilage damage and bone fractures. Surgery to replace a dogs elbow can cost between £1,000 and £3,000.

Canine Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) – also known as Chronic Degenerative Radiculomyopathy (CDRM) causes weakness to back legs leading to paralysis and is usually noticed when your pet reaches 8 or 9 years old. It is a genetic condition that is common amongst German Shepherds.

There is no cure but treatments are centered around medicines to keep your pet comfortable and complementary treatments such as physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. Make sure any pet insurance policy has good levels of complementary treatment cover.

Anal furunculosis – a painful disease that causes ulceration around a dog’s bottom, very common in middle aged or old aged German shepherd dogs, although other breeds can be affected. It is treated with drug therapy and occasionally surgery. However the cost of the drugs are very expensive and can run into hundreds of pounds per month.

Inherited eye diseases – including cataracts and multifocal retinal dysplasia (a malformation of the retina). Whilst not as common as some of the other conditions, they do show up in German Shepherds from time to time. Cataract consultations cost around £400 and surgery up to £2,000.

Haemophilia A and B – bleeding disorders that stop blood from clotting and cause wounds to bleed more than they should. There is no cure for this condition and treatment after an episode requires intravenous whole blood or plasma transfusions until the bleeding can be controlled. The cost is around £300 - £500 per session.

Thyroid issues - Are among the most common that German Shepherd owners will encounter with their dogs. For some reason, Alsatians have many problems with their endocrine levels. Having your dog regularly tested for these issues is one of the best ways to prevent these issues from becoming life-threatening. Medication can cost up to £50 per month.

Bladder Stones - German shepherds are, unfortunately, rather prone to developing urinary stones. The most common type are stones in the bladder. They are at their mildest, quite uncomfortable. More commonly, however, they are very painful for your dog and can be very difficult to pass. If left untreated for too long they can result in serious chronic health issues, bladder and kidney damage being the most common. Some Pet Insurance policies do not cover the cost of prescribed food to treat the problem, so check carefully to make sure yours does.

Dental Health Problems - This breed is also prone to developing issues with their teeth and suffer from gum infections. This means that you need to be very cautious and take the time to brush your dog’s teeth from the time that they are young. These are German Shepherd health problems that can easily be avoided with good food and proper dental care. Again some policies only cover dental issues caused by accidents. Make sure your policy covers dental conditions due to illness as well.

This list is not exhaustive, and there are other conditions that German Shepherds have been shown to be prone to. However it is quite clear that if your German Shepherd is unlucky enough to suffer from one of these conditions, or any other, you could be looking at rather a sizeable vet bill, that could run into thousands of pounds and may continue for the rest of your dogs life.

The German Shepherd dog personality and Temperament

German Shepherds are not a dog for everyone. German Shepherds require a calm, stable, and firm pack leader or they will assume that role for you. Puppies AND adults need socialization, exercise and stimulating mental challenges. With these things, you will have a wonderful companion, loyal friend, and protector.

Good natured, easy to train, intelligent with a strong protective nature. The German Shepherd needs a home that is prepared to give this dog the attention to training, and exercise it needs. Needs time to get to know strangers.

As with most dogs, they benefit from training as puppies to socialise and obey commands, involve the whole family in training, making it fun and not a chore. They need plenty of opportunities to exercise and play. A well-trained and socialised German Shepherd makes a wonderful pet.

A large breed of dog suitable for larger houses and gardens, but happy in a town or country environment. Needs plenty of exercise and a strong dedicated owner.

Taking Care of your German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd Dog needs lots of exercise and likes to be active. Their coat is double and either medium or long length and needs weekly grooming.

The German Shepherd Dog will need the occasional shower so stay clear, as when they shake themselves dry, you may be joining in the shower.

German Shepherd Dog with other pets and Children

The German Shepherd Dog is good with other pets if introduced in the right way. When young they can be boisterous and want to play which may intimidate a small pet at first meeting, With the right training they are intelligent, loving, and a happy addition to most pet loving owners and families. It does sometimes have a protect drive. Something to remember.

German Shepherd Dogs like children in their families, and will be protective of them, but as they are big and boisterous, do better in a family with older children. If socialised properly from a young age, they will be tolerant to a point, and easy going. It’s sensible to make sure that children are not left alone with these powerful dogs.

Teach your child never to approach any dog while he's sleeping or eating or to try to take the dog's food away. This is common sense that should apply to all dogs. German Shepherd are not often constant barkers, a good trait in a busy family. Good watchdogs and guard dogs.

How much is pet insurance for a German Shepherd?

There are a few factors that need to be taken into account when calculating the cost of dog insurance. The area in which you live (City vets generally charge more than country vets and as a result premiums are more expensive), the breed of dog, the age and the purchase cost are all relevant cost factors.

The lifespan of a German Shepherd is around 9-13 years, although some can live much longer. (The oldest recorded age being 18 years). A well bred pedigree German Shepherd puppy can cost up to £3,000.

A common complaint about any pet insurance is the unexpected yearly increase in premiums at renewal time. The reason for the yearly increase is that as your dog gets older, the chance of him or her requiring medical treatment also increases, especially if it is a breed that are more prone to medical conditions as they get older, and Insurers have to take this into account when calculating renewal premiums.

To help you understand how this process works and what to expect price wise as your German Shepherd gets older, we have produced a graph illustrating just how premiums increase over time.

The criteria we used in the graph were based on a male pedigree German Shepherd costing £2,000 and a combined market average of all Lifetime Policies who offered a vet fee limit of £2,000 or more.

Although Dog Insurance for a German Shepherd is more expensive than a lot of other breeds (due to the potential health issues), remember that the cost has been calculated as a market average, rather than the actual premium you are likely to pay. By the time your pet reaches the age of 8, premiums have roughly increased by 60% and by the time your German Shepherd is 11 years old, premiums have doubled.

Best Dog Insurance for German Shepherds
How much do the different types of German Shepherd Insurance policies cost?

At some point you will need to decide whether to opt for a cheaper policy with restrictions on the amount of time you can claim for (known as Time Limited policies), the more expensive option of a maximum benefit policy, where you can continue to claim without the time restrictions as long as you don't claim more than the benefit limit.

Finally the most expensive option is the Lifetime policy where as the name suggests, if your pet suffers from a lifelong condition, this type of policy will continue to pay out.

Don't worry if you find this a bit confusing, we have written a buyers guide to pet insurance, which explains the different covers in more detail. In the meantime to give you an idea of the difference in costs between the three policies, we have produced a graph with the average premiums for each type of policy based on a five year old German Shepherd.

Who offers the best German Shepherd Dog Insurance?

This is the bit you have probably been waiting for! The cost of insurance cover varies greatly depending on how old your dog is, which company you ask and what features you want. Even where you live can have an impact on the cost, also how much your dog cost to buy.

We have taken the pet insurance market as a whole (not just the policies on comparison websites) and discovered which Pet Insurers favour German Shepherd's and provide the best pet insurance, taking into account, cover, service and of course cost.

The Pet Insurers listed below represent insurance policies we feel provide a good level of cover for a reasonable price.

The search criteria we used was based upon a pedigree German Shepherd costing £2,000, living in the midlands area of the UK. Quotes were based on a one year old, a six year old and a ten year old male and show the best policies that we rated 3 stars or higher.

Best Time Limited Policies for a one year old German Shepherd

These are our Time Limited policy hot picks for a one year old German Shepherd. The cost of Dog Insurance becomes more expensive as your dog gets older, so it's important that you insure your dog as soon as possible. Our recommendations take into account levels of cover provided, our overall policy rating and of course the price.
