The RSPCA (Royal Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) needs no introduction. It is the oldest welfare charity in the UK, rescuing over 100,000 animals last year. Their ethos is to raise standards of care and awareness of issues affecting all animals, working hard to protect and ensure that they can live free from pain and suffering.

In conjunction with Covea Insurance Plc, the RSPCA also have their own Pet Insurance Scheme for Cats and Dogs. They offer five levels of cover, Accident only, Bronze, and the five star rated Silver, Gold and Platinum policies.

15% of the premium on every policy sold, goes directly to helping less fortunate animals.

  • Policies must provide cover for all core sections and all secondary sections.
  • Vets Fees - Policies must provide a minimum maximum benefit of £6,000, or £4,000 per condition and cover either;
  1. A maximum benefit per condition no renewal guarantee.
  2. A maximum limit per condition with a lifetime renewal guarantee; or
  3. A maximum benefit per year with a lifetime renewal guarantee.
  • Cruciate Ligaments - Damage to, or disease of the cruciate ligament is a common problem in animals. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £4,000.
  • MRI/CT Scans - If your pet suffers from seizures, paralysis or back problems, your vet may recommend an MRI scan. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £2,000.
  • Euthanasia - If your pet needs to be put to sleep to alleviate further suffering, policies must cover this. A policy must offer at least £100 to cover the cost of euthanasia.
  • Complementary treatments ? The industry average for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy is £1,000. Five star policies have at least this amount of cover.
  • Prescribed Food - All five star policies must cover the cost of prescription food (to treat bladder stones) up to at least £100
  • Dental treatment - Dental treatment for accidents of at least £500.
  • Loss of your Pet - The industry average benefit for loss of your pet due to accident, illness, theft or straying is £1,000. All policies must offer at least this amount.
  • Compulsory excesses - The industry average for the age at which additional compulsory excesses are charged is 6. All five star policies will not charge an additional compulsory excess until at least this age.
  • Five-star policies may provide additional service and cover benefits over and above standard policies.
  • Premiums are competitive in relation to the cover provided.

Key Points you need to know about RSPCA Pet Insurance's policy wording

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Pet Insurance?

You must be the owner and keeper of your pet. They must live with you at home at an address in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Your Pet (dog or cat) must be older than 8 weeks of age and be in good health, free from injury or illness.

You must keep your pet vaccinated against (Dogs: distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus. Cats: feline infectious enteritis, feline leukaemia and cat flu).

You agree to take care of your pet, including arranging and paying for any treatment to reduce the risk of illness or injury. This includes routine dentistry.

You do not have any convictions or prosecutions pending for theft or dishonesty (excluding spent convictions under The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974).

2. What type of policies do they offer?

The RSPCA offer three types of policy and (apart from the accident only policy), a choice of two levels of cover;

Accident only policy - covers accidents up to the £2,500 vet fee limit or for up to 12 months from first date of treatment.

Bronze policy - covers your pet for both illnesses and accidents and vet fees of up to £4,000 per condition. Each condition is covered up to the vet fee limit.

Silver Policy - covers your pet for both illnesses and accidents and vet fees of up to £6,000 per condition. Each condition is covered up to the vet fee limit.

Gold Policy - covers your pet for both illnesses and accidents and £8,000 of cover for vet treatments per year. This benefit is reinstated each year provided the policy is renewed.

Platinum Policy - covers your pet for both illnesses and accidents and £12,000 of cover for vet treatments per year. This benefit is reinstated each year provided the policy is renewed.

3. What's not covered?

Many problems with Pet Insurance occur because customers don't understand or haven't checked the policy wording.
Every policy has a list of terms/conditions and exclusions, which is why you must read the policy carefully.

We have helped by listing down exclusions that we think you should know about.

RSPCA Pet Insurance does not cover;

  1. Any costs that result from treatment recommended by your vet to prevent illness or injury.
  2. Costs relating to the killing/controlling of fleas and general health enhancers.
  3. Treatment that is unconventional or unlicensed.
  4. Treatment for behavioural problems that could have been prevented by puppy training and socialising.
  5. The cost of vaccinations, spaying, retained testicles or castration. If your pet is not vaccinated there is no cover in respect of illnesses that it should have been vaccinated against.
  6. Routine Blood and Urine Tests.
  7. House Calls, treatment outside surgery hours, hospitalisation, emergency transportation, unless a vet confirms absolutely necessary.
  8. The cost of purchasing or hiring equipment, including but not limited to harnesses, cages, carts and sharps containers.
  9. Any claim for death benefit if your pet is aged 9 years and above at the date of death.
  10. Any claim connected to Rabies, Avian Influenza.
  11. Pets used for breeding purposes and dogs used for guarding, racing, personal protection or search and rescue purposes, dogs being used as working dogs or gun dogs.
  12. The following breeds of dog, African Wild Dog, American Bulldog, American Indian Dog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Rottweiler, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bandog, Boerboel, Bully Kutta, Canary Dog, Cane Corso, Chinese Shar-Pei Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Dingo, Dogo Argentino, Dogue Brasileiro, Fila Brasileiro, Gull Dong, Husky Wolf Hybrid, Irish Staffordshire Blue Bull Terrier, Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Pit Bull Terrier, Saarlooswolfhound, Tosa, Tosa Inu, Wolf Hybrid, Wolfdog, or any dog crossbred with any of these breeds. We will also not pay claims for any animal registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and The Dangerous Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 or any subsequent amendments.
  13. Dogs that have been trained to attack or used for security purposes in the past (other than former Police or Military dogs) or that live in premises which sell alcohol.

4. Are complementary treatments covered?

Complementary treatments are covered under all RSPCA policies:
Bronze - up to £500
Silver - up to £1,000
Gold and Platinum - up to £1,500

Complementary treatments include Physiotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy, hydrotherapy,
chiropractic and alternative medicines recommended by or carried out by your vet or a person trained to do so.

Behavioural problems including refferal to a behaviourist are also covered under RSPCA policies:
Bronze - up to £500 (behaviourist £250)
Silver - up to £750 (behaviourist £250)
Gold and Platinum - up to £1,000 (behaviourist £250)

5. Does the policy cover Prescription food and Dentistry?

RSPCA policies cover dentistry as follows:

Bronze - Accident only up to £500

Silver - Accident only up to £1,000

Gold and Platinum - Accident and Illness up to £2,000

RSPCA policies cover clinical diets described as "A clinically formulated diet prescribed by your vet as part of your pet’s
treatment for a specific illness or condition, but excluding one prescribed for weight reduction."

Bronze - no cover

Silver -  up to £100

Gold and Platinum - up to £500

6. Are MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims covered?

MRI/CT Scans and Cruciate Ligament claims are covered up to the vet fees limit.

7. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

All policies provide a farewell benefit, which includes the cost of the fee charged by your vet to put your pet to sleep, and
the cost of cremation or burial, if your pet dies or has to be put to sleep by a vet following an accident or illness during the period of insurance.

Bronze and Silver Farewell cover - up to £150

Gold and Platinum Farewell cover - up to £200

8. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

RSPCA offer a multi pet discount (more than one dog or cat) of 10%.

9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

The RSPCA like most other Pet Insurers do not cover your pets pre-existing medical conditions. Pre-existing conditions are described as "Any condition, or complication directly resulting from or relating to that condition that has been identified or investigated by a vet or that has the same diagnosis, clinical signs or symptoms as a condition known to you prior to the start of this insurance, regardless of the areas affected in or on your pet’s body."

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

The RSPCA do not cover false pregnancy, pregnancy or giving birth.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

The Silver, Gold and Platinum policy extends cover to allow you to take your pet abroad to European Countries for a maximum of 60 days in anyone policy year.

In addition to the extension of vet fees cover whilst abroad, policies also cover, Emergency Repatriation, Holiday Cancellation, additional quarantine expenses and loss of your pets health certificate.

12. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

For any new RSPCA policy, no cover is provided in respect of any accidents occurring in the first 48 hours and illnesses in the first 14 days.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

RSPCA have a range of excesses in respect of different claims.

Veterinary fees The first £100 for each illness or injury treated.
Accidental damage to third party property - the first £75 of any claim.
Holiday cancellation - the first £75 of any claim.
Emergency expenses - the first £50 of any claim.
Third party liability - the first £250 of any property.

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

When your pet turns 7 years of age at the date of treatment, you will be required to pay the first £100 plus 10%
of the remaining cost of treatment per illness or injury.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The website is very well laid out and the RSPCA provide plenty of information on their pet insurance policies, even though this is only a part of their site.

There is a great side by side comparison of covers and additional useful information such as details on common illnesses and
answers to quite a few frequently asked questions, but if you need additional help, you can phone the helpline. The RSPCA do not operate live chat.

The quotation system is easy to use and the quote offers a side by side comparison of cover, premium and access to policy wordings and Insurance Product Information documents.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy wording is only 10 pages long, but includes a detailed summary of cover, benefits from a reduced number of exclusions, a tidy layout and is very easy to read and understand.

This is backed up in tests, which scored the policy wording 60 out of 100, meaning it was standard reading and could be understood by anyone with a reading age of 11 - 13.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

19. What do customer reviews say?

The only meaningful reviews we could find was on Feefo. The RSPCA has received 3841 over the past few years with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5. The majority of customers appear happy with the service they have received. The few low reviews received relate to administration errors or phone delays.

20. Are there any administration charges?

There are no administration charges.

Currently there are no special discounts or promotions.

22. Overall Summary

RSPCA pet insurance is expensive when compared to many other companies, however they clearly provide some of the best levels of cover available on the market and remember that 15%
of the amount you pay goes directly to helping less fortunate animals.

If you want a 5 star fully comprehensive pet insurance policy, with a reduced number of terms and conditions, then you should consider the Silver, Gold or Platinum policy.

There is no upper age limit on your pet to getting a quote and they will cover certain working dogs (see the policy for terms and conditions)

The slight downside is that you must supply details of the claim together with fully completed and signed supporting documentation within 30 days of notifying them, otherwise this may result in
a reduced settlement.
