  • Policies must provide cover for all core sections and all secondary sections.
  • Vets Fees - Policies must provide a minimum maximum benefit of £6,000, or £4,000 per condition and cover either;
  1. A maximum benefit per condition no renewal guarantee.
  2. A maximum limit per condition with a lifetime renewal guarantee; or
  3. A maximum benefit per year with a lifetime renewal guarantee.
  • Cruciate Ligaments - Damage to, or disease of the cruciate ligament is a common problem in animals. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £4,000.
  • MRI/CT Scans - If your pet suffers from seizures, paralysis or back problems, your vet may recommend an MRI scan. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £2,000.
  • Euthanasia - If your pet needs to be put to sleep to alleviate further suffering, policies must cover this. A policy must offer at least £100 to cover the cost of euthanasia.
  • Complementary treatments ? The industry average for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy is £1,000. Five star policies have at least this amount of cover.
  • Prescribed Food - All five star policies must cover the cost of prescription food (to treat bladder stones) up to at least £100
  • Dental treatment - Dental treatment for accidents of at least £500.
  • Loss of your Pet - The industry average benefit for loss of your pet due to accident, illness, theft or straying is £1,000. All policies must offer at least this amount.
  • Compulsory excesses - The industry average for the age at which additional compulsory excesses are charged is 6. All five star policies will not charge an additional compulsory excess until at least this age.
  • Five-star policies may provide additional service and cover benefits over and above standard policies.

Key Points you need to know about More Than Pet 's policy wording

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Pet Insurance?

You must be the owner and keep of the pet and be at least 18 years old.


Your pet must be at least eight weeks old and live with you at your home address in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.


You must never have had an insurance policy declared void or cancelled by an insurer.

2. What type of policies do they offer?

More Th>n offer three policies Basic, Classic and the 5 star rated Premier policy

The Basic policy covers vet fees up to either £1,500 or £3,000 and is limited to 12 months.

The Classic policy covers vet fees up to a maximum of either £4,000 or £8,000 per condition.

The Premier policy covers vet fees up to a maximum of either £4,000 (£1,000 per condition) or £12,000 per year (£4,000 per condition). The amount is reinstated each year upon renewal.

3. What's not covered?

This is a list of the important exclusions. More Th>n do not cover;

  1. Preventative, Routine, Cosmetic examinations, treatments, tests or procedures that do not treat an illness or injury, or complications that result from any of these.
  2. Castration, spaying or retained/un-descended testicles.
  3. Nail Clipping, bathing or de-matting.
  4. Vaccinations, homeopathic vaccinations or for parvovirus, hepatitis, distemper, leptospirosis in dogs or feline leukaemia, cat flu or infectious enteritis in cats if you have not had your pet vaccinated against them and kept the vaccinations up to date.
  5. Fleas, Ticks, or worming.
  6. Supplements and probiotics, products you can purchase over the counter or on line without prescription.
  7. Out of hours surgery or non essential hospitalisation and house calls, unless your vet confirms it is absolutely necessary.
  8. The removal of dew claws unless as a result of an accident.
  9. Stem-cell, gene therapy, or transplant surgery, including pre and post,operative care, the cost of prosthesis, including any veterinary treatment needed to fit the prosthesis, other than the cost of hip, knee and/or elbow replacement(s).
  10. Any claim as a result of a notifiable disease named in the Animal Health Act, such as rabies and foot-and-mouth disease.
  11. Any pet which should be registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 or the following breeds or cross breeds Pit Bull, Pit Bull type, Japanese Tosa, Fila Braziliero, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Wolf/Wolf hybrid.
  12. Any pet used for breeding (this means your pet has not been used for breeding more than two times in its life).
  13. Any pet used as a business to make money or earn an income.
  14. Any dog that has been trained to attack, used for security or as a guard dog, used for racing or fighting, or has had complaints made about its behaviour or been the cause of an incident or legal action.
  15. Any death benefit caused by illness for any pet aged 9 years and above.

4. Are complementary treatments covered?

All three policies cover complementary treatments described as acupuncture, homeopathy,
chiropractic manipulation, hydrotherapy, osteopathy and physiotherapy.

In addition the Premier policy covers Behavioural problems up to £1,000.

5. Does the policy cover Prescription food and Dentistry?

The Basic and Classic policy cover the cost of prescription food, but only to treat urinary crystals or stones and renal and thyroid conditions.

The Premier policy covers all treatment food up to £500 except to treat obseity or oral hygiene diets.

The Basic and Classic policy covers dental treatment of teeth and gums if they have been damaged in an accident.

The Premier policy covers damage to or removal of teeth as the result of an accident or illness and also covers tooth decay and gum disease, provided your pet has a regular 12 month dental check up. 

6. Are MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims covered?

Full cover for MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims up to the vet fees limit.

7. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

The Basic and Classic policies cover Euthanasia, Cremation or Burial up to £150 as a paid optional extra.

In respect of the Premier policy this is automatically covered up to £200.

8. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

You are able to cover more than one pet under the same policy. More Th>n offer a 10% multi-pet discount for each additional pet insured under the same policy.

9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

More Th>n policies do not cover your pet's pre-existing medical conditions. Existing conditions are defined as;

Signs or symptoms, whether diagnosed or un-diagnosed injuries or illnesses.

Existing illnesses, injuries, physical abnormalities and any that may lead to other health issues or injuries and/or are medically linked to other illnesses or injuries.

 

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

The More Th>n policy excludes any claims in respect of Breeding, Pregnancy, giving birth, rearing puppies or kittens.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

All three policies cover you when taking your pet abroad. In addition to the extension of vet fees cover abroad, the policies also covers, Emergency expenses, Holiday Cancellation, Quarantine costs, assistance with replacing a lost health certificate or passport and repeat tapeworm treatments.

You must comply with the PETS travel scheme and are covered for a maximum of 3 trips, provided any trip last no longer than 60 days.

 

12. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

There is no cover under More Th>n pet insurance for accidents or injuries that occur within the first 24 hours of a new policy and illnesses including problems with cruciate ligaments within the first 14 days.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

The standard policy excess is £100 per insured incident except dog liability claims where the excess is £250 and if your pet requires referral to another vet and that vet is not in the More Th>n network, the excess increase to £200 in respect of any claim.

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

When your pet turns 9, in addition to the standard excess, you will be required to contribute an additional 20% of the cost of any claim. 

For example if you need to claim £1,000, you will be required to pay £100 +20% of the balance totalling £280.

 

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The website is well put together as you would expect from a company like More Th>n. Plenty of information is provided allowing you to compare covers and sums insured.

There is no live chat, but their customer help section answers a lot of questions. At the present time, due to the current pandemic, More Th>n have decided to close their telephone help and service lines. Apart from claims the only way you can contact them is by email with a minimum turnaround of 5 days.

The quotation system is easy to use and provides good information, including the policy wording and Insurance Product documents.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

At 28 pages long, the policy is nicely laid out. There is a comprehensive summary of cover and each in respect of vets fees each policy is dealt with separately. Colour coding is used to differentiate between what is and isn't covered.

In tests, the policy wording scored 59.9 out of 100, found to be standard/average, with a reading age of between 15 - 17 required to be able to understand the text.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

You can find More Th>n pet insurance on GoCompare, Money Supermarket and Compare the Market comparison sites. During testing we found that even though all quotes were based upon the same information, the premium quoted was different in every case and that all policies have a compulsory 20% co insurance payment from day one. This is not the case if you obtain a quote direct from the More Th>n website.

18. Does the policy include a helpline?

The policy includes free access to VetFone as 24/7 pet health helpline.

19. What do customer reviews say?

More Than have received nearly 12,000 reviews on trust pilot and stand up well to scrutiny with a respectable 4.3 out of 5.

The majority of reviews are for motor insurance. We found a few for pet insurance, the only real complaint was about increases in premium at renewal, although this can be for a variety of reasons.

Overall the majority of customers are happy with the service that is provided.

More Th>n are currently competitive for the levels of cover they provide. The Premier £12,000 policy has been rated as 5 stars, for the overall high levels of cover but bear in mind the condition limit is £4,000.

You are not required to contribute additional amounts to any claim until your pet reaches the age of 9. Claims can be made completely online and you have 24/7 access to VetFone, which are able to discuss any queries or health problems with your pet, without leaving the comfort of your home.
