HISTORY OF YOUR BEAGLE

The Beagle breed has existed for hundreds of years and is one of the most familiar breeds in the world and were written about as early as the 1400s.

They are descended from hounds used by hunters on foot in England, Wales, and France. A smaller pocket hound variety was used for hunts on horseback because the dogs stood less than 25 CM tall and could be carried in a coat pocket, to the start of the hunt.

The Beagle is best known for rabbit hunting, although the breed has also been used to hunt animals such as wild pigs. Some Beagles are still used individually or in packs for hunting, but most beagles today are engaging pets.

SIZE OF YOUR BEAGLE

The Beagle are small-medium sized dogs. Males generally reach a height of 33.40 CM and weigh around 9-11 Kg. Females are normally a bit smaller.

HEALTH OF YOUR BEAGLE

The Beagle is a purebred dog and is usually long lived (15 years), but as with similar dogs may encounter breed related health issues.

Some health problems are possible but not all Beagles will get any, or all these diseases, but it’s important to be aware of them if you’re considering this breed.

Epilepsy – a brain disorder which can lead to seizures.

Meningitis – inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, causing fever and neck pain.

Hypothyroidism – where the thyroid doesn’t make enough of the chemical that breaks down food into energy.

Certain cancers.

Otitis Externa – where the ear canal becomes inflamed/infected, causing pain and irritation.

PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT 

Beagles were bred as pack animals, they like company so they’re prone to separation anxiety which causes them to destroy things when left unattended. Not all Beagles will howl, but most will bark when confronted with strange situations, but due to their nature not so good as a guard dog.

They are loving and sociable dogs who enjoy being involved in whatever is going on in the house, as pack dogs, they generally get along well with other animals and their human friends — and they think everyone is their new best friend.

However they can be wilful and if not a confident trainer, you may need a helping hand from a dog trainer for initial training. Due to their size and adaptability, Beagles are popular pets for families and first-time owners. They suit active homes where there is always someone around as they feel happier with company.

 

Does not like to be alone and can be vocal. Barking may become a problem if not trained correctly. Good with children.

 

GROOMING/CARE OF YOUR BEAGLE

You can expect some shedding  however their coats are relatively low maintenance. Brush weekly to keep their coat looking good. Keep an eye on your Beagle’s ears to make sure they are clean and dry to help prevent any ear infections. They need exercise every day of at least an hour but take care not to over feed.

When you’re out with your Beagle, it’s best to keep them on the lead unless you’re somewhere secure. Beagles need training for recall as the can suffer from selective hearing and you may find their recall isn’t so good if they smell something more interesting.

 FEEDING YOUR BEAGLE

There are many suitable brands of dog feed on the market, most supply feeding guides. The first item on the ingredients list will tell you how much of the main ingredient is in the food e.g. Chicken, beef salmon etc. Your vet will advise if a special diet is needed.
