Poodles are intelligent, trainable dogs with a quick brain and sweet nature, that can think for themselves given the right direction. They make excellent companion dogs. Good for families, who want a small size/medium, intelligent breed of dog, and are prepared to socialise them from a young age. Thought to be second to border Collies in intelligence.

History of your Poodle

It is thought that the  modern Standard Poodle originated in Germany roughly equivalent to the modern Standard Poodle . From the Middle Ages and it was Germany’s water dog, but similar dogs were known in England as English Water Spaniel, in France the Barbet, Ireland the Irish Water Spaniel and Nethlands Wetterhoun.  there exists a number of works by German artists from as early as the 17th century that depict dogs of recognisably Poodle type, but some still think the breed originated in Russia, Piedmont or Northwest Africa. Todays Poodle’s ancestors were widely used by waterfowler’s The breed’s distinctive coat clip was though to have developed as a practicality when they used as waterfowler’s dogs

Because of their intelligence, friendly nature, and looks  the Poodle was sometimes used in circuses especially in France.  The breed was selectively bred down in size and is now known as the Miniature Poodle, which was until 1907 known as the Toy Poodle, as a smaller sized dog was easier to handle and transport in a travelling.

The English name poodle is derived from the German word pudel, or pudelin, which means to splash in the water. In  France, Poodles are called Caniche, a name derived from chien canard, meaning duck dog.

The Miniature Poodle was originally thought to have been bred to sniff out truffles but is now most often a companion dog .

 Size of your Poodle

Toy Poodle height 25.4 CM but sturdier then the teacup, weight up to 5.4 kilos.

Miniature Poodle height up to 35.50 CM weight up to 8 Kilos.

Standard or Maxi Poodle height up to 38.1 CM and weigh up to 8.6 kilos

Health of your poodle

It is imperative that you check out the breeder, as these dogs are popular and expensive. Unscrupulous puppy farms don’t care about the health of the parents.

You can minimise any health problems by making sure your dog comes from a registered breeder and that you see the puppy with its mother before you buy. Check the premises / home.

Poodles do not usually have many health problems as their parents should be checked but be aware of rouge breeders that are not concerned with health of their dogs, just money.  But as with all Poodles they can suffer from ear infections. This can be mitigated with proper health care.

Personality of your Poodle

Poodles learn quickly. They are a highly intelligent, energetic, lovable, and sociable breed. If there is a lap or bed going, they’ll be there even if they are the larger sized poodle. They require both physical and intellectual activities to keep them happy, don’t like to be left behind when their family go out.

They excel at obedience training, especially needed, as they like to bark at any excuse. Poodles who are loved, reciprocate with devotion and loyalty, and if sure danger is near, will bark and quickly become very protective of its owner and family.

A Small/medium breed of dog. The small breed suitable for apartments and houses, with small or large gardens with appropriate exercise, but happy in a town or country environment. The larger version of this breed will need more space and exercise, and thought should be given as to the environment the larger dogs will be living in.

Grooming and care of your Poodle

The Poodle needs daily exercise and engagement with its family or owner. Their ears do need keeping an eye on as they can need regular cleaning. Poodles shed hair in minimal amounts and are often called a hypoallergenic dog breed. Its coat needs grooming and clipping on a regular basis, as the hair will grow and matt if this is not done, causing distress to the dog.

Although a Poodles coat is short and curly, if asthmatic, or you have an allergy, it’s sensible to check that this dog is suitable for your household.   More information can be found on the www.thekennelclub.org.uk.

Feeding your Poodle

There are many suitable brands of dog feed on the market, most supply feeding guides. The first item on the ingredients list will tell you how much of the main ingredient is in the food e.g. Chicken, beef salmon etc. Your vet will advise if a special diet is needed.  There are some foods that you should never give to any dog for example Chocolate, grapes, sultanas, onions.

Poodles with other pets

They get on well with other pets if introduced when young, socialising is important as they love to jump around and play.

Poodles with Children

If raised with children and socialised from a young age a Poodle will love to play with children in its own family. They love chasing a tennis ball or join in with a game of football. Playtime with young friends should be supervised.  Most problems arise from poor socialisation and boredom so include children in a training regime. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s sleeping or eating or to try to take the dog’s food away.

Important: Always make sure you go and visit the breeder of the puppy you are buying. Never send money for a deposit/full payment in advance of meeting them. To find out what to look for when buying a puppy see advice here   https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/getting-a-dog-or-puppy/buying-a-dog/

The best dog insurance for your Poodle

Poodle lifespan is around 14 to 15 years, although some can live much longer.. As they have become more popular the cost of these dogs has jumped and they can cost between £1000- £3000 depending on demand and availability. This makes them a lucrative incentive to puppy farmers, who have no care for their dogs, so buyer beware.

When choosing dog insurance for your dog, pay special attention to the age at which an Insurer will either no longer quote or require an additional payment when it comes to settling any claim.
