History of your Cavachon

Cavachons were bred in America in the 1900s when trying to breed a dog with a non-shedding coat perfect for families. The Cavachon, like all hybrid dogs, is not recognised as a pedigree breed. A Cavachon is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. It became one of the most popular dogs in England in the 21^st century.

Health of your Cavachon

The Cavachon are not a purebred dog and as with similar lines may encounter Hybrid related health issues related to its pure-bred parents. It’s normally a healthy, long lived dog 10-12 years. They do not usually have many health problems, as their parents should have been checked, but be aware of rouge breeders that are not concerned with the welfare of their dogs, just money.

It is imperative that you check out the breeder, as these dogs are popular and expensive, from about on average £573 but can cost substantially more. Unscrupulous puppy farms don’t care about the health of the parents, so buyer beware.

They can suffer from ear infections. This can be mitigated with proper health care.

You can minimise any health problems by making sure your dog comes from a registered breeder/home and that you see the puppy with its mother before you buy. Check the premises / home.

PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT  OF YOUR CAVACHON

Cavachons learn quickly. They are a highly intelligent, energetic, lovable, and sociable breed. If there is a lap or bed going, they’ll be there. They require both physical and intellectual activities to keep them happy, don’t like to be left behind at all when their family go out, and excel at obedience training, especially needed, as they like to bark at any excuse. Puppies should be taught not to bark without reason, without scaring them, which could end up with a timid and shy dog.

Cavachons who are loved, reciprocate with devotion and loyalty, and if sure danger is near, will bark and quickly become very protective of its owner and family.

A Small breed of dog suitable for apartments and houses with small or large gardens, with appropriate exercise, but happy in a town or country environment. Love their families.

 

Grooming and care of your Cavachon

The Cavachon needs daily exercise and engagement with its family or owner. Their ears do need keeping an eye on as they can need regular cleaning. They shed hair in minimal amounts and are often called a hypoallergenic dog breed.

Its coat needs grooming and clipping on a regular basis, as the hair will grow and matt if this is not done, causing distress to the dog.

A first generation Cavachon’s coat is often more non-shedding than later Cavachons.

Although their coat is short and curly, if asthmatic, or you have an allergy, it’s sensible to check that this dog is suitable for your household.

Feeding your Cavachon

There are many suitable brands of dog feed on the market, most supply feeding guides. The first item on the ingredients list will tell you how much of the main ingredient is in the food e.g. Chicken, beef, salmon etc.

Cavachon with other pets

Cavachons get on well with other pets if introduced when young, socialising is important as they love to jump around and play.

Cavachons with Children

If raised with children and socialised from a young age a Cavachon will love to play with children in its own family. They like chasing a tennis ball or join in with a game of football. Playtime with young friends should be supervised due to its small size.

Most problems arise from poor socialisation and boredom so include children in a training regime. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s sleeping or eating or to try to take the dog’s food away.
