The chosen benefit covers all vet fee claims and is reinstated each year, provided you renew the policy. This type of policy allows you to continue to claim for long term conditions.

3. What's not covered?

We often see complaints because a claims has been declined or the agreed settlement amount is less than the customer was expecting. Whilst not always the case, a common reason for this is due to a lack of understanding of the policy by the customer.

It is essential that you read your policy wording carefully and familiarise yourself with the terminology. We have produced a Comprehensive Pet Insurance Buyers guide to help explain the different types of cover. We have also listed below the important exclusions that we think you should know about.

Waggel will cover dental treatment up to £1,000 caused by an accident or illness as long as a dental examination was carried out by a vet within the last 12 months that confirms there were no previous dental injuries, illnesses or observable changes to your pet's teeth from their normal state, condition or appearance.

Waggel allows you to insure more than one pet (cat or dog) under the same policy.

9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

Waggel exclude any pre-existing medical condition that your pet may suffer from.

Waggel describe pre existing conditions as; "Any injury or illness that relates to or results from an accident, injury, illness or where your pet showed observable changes to their normal healthy state, condition, appearance, bodily functions or behaviour that could be observed visually, diagnostically or otherwise before your policy’s original start date."

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

Waggel don’t provide any coverage for pets used for breeding (whether as a business or not) or where your pet has been bred for monetary gain or reward.

If your pet gets pregnant during the policy period, Waggel won’t be able to cover her for anything that relates to her pregnancy, whelping or kittening.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

Since leaving the European Union on the 1st January 2021, the rules on taking your pet abroad with you have changed.

Pet Passports are no longer valid, having been replaced with an Animal Health Certificate.

You can still take your abroad and Waggel will extend vet fees cover for up to 90 days either consecutively or cumulatively during one period of insurance.

You will be unable to make a claim within 14 days from the start of your policy, for any claim that relates to Vet Fees, Loss, Straying and Death.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

The standard policy excess is £250. However you are able to elect to reduce this at the quotation stage, in exchange for a higher premium.

Under the public liability section the claim contribution for property damage is £250 per claim.

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

When your pet reaches the age of 8, Waggel will require a further contribution to claims of 20%, over and above the standard excess.

For example; if your claim was for £1,000, you would be required to contribute £250 plus 20% of the balance, a total of £400.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The Waggel website is certainly different and has a modern tech look about it, although we did find it difficult to navigate. There is some useful comparison information comparing Waggel to other Pet Insurers and clicking through you get to see a breakdown of the cover that the policy actually provides, including a copy of the policy wording.

We couldn't find any frequently asked questions. The company does operate a live chat system, although it wasn't immediately obvious. We couldn't find any other information on how to contact the company by phone.

The quotation system is certainly unique and is quick and easy to use. You have the option to choose the level of cover and whether you want to reduce the level of the excess, before providing the rest of your details.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy at 21 pages long is not laid out like a traditional policy and uses links from the policy to Waggels website when explaining a particular term or condition in more detail.

The Waggel policy does not have a summary of cover, or index to assist you and we found the policy harder to read and understand than others.

In readability tests the policy wording scored 43.9 out of 100 and was classed as difficult to read with the reading age of an 18 - 19 year old required to be able interpret the text.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

Waggel Pet Insurance can only be found on the Moneysupermarket website and you only get two options to choose from. We recommend visiting the Waggel website direct for a full breakdown of the different options and quotes available.

18. Does the policy include a helpline?

All Waggel policyholders have free access to video calls with First Vet.

19. What do customer reviews say?

Waggel have received 69 customer reviews on trustpilot with an overall rating of 4.3/5 and 1065 customer reviews on Reviews.io, with an overall rating of 4.75/5.

Our research indicates that most customers are very happy with the service they have received from Waggel and this includes settlement of claims.

We did notice that the few dissatisfied customers were due to claims being rejected because they were classed as pre-existing conditions. We recommend that you read the policy carefully so that you are aware of specific terms and conditions.

20. Are there any administration charges?

There are no administration charges.

21. Are there any special discounts or promotions?

There are no special discounts or promotions apart from if you refer a friend who takes out a Waggel policy, you earn one months free insurance.

22. Overall Summary

Waggel is a pet insurer that utilizes technology to streamline the process of not only taking out a policy, but also settling claims.

With Waggel you are able to upload a claim very quickly. Each claim is assigned a personal claims handler and you can track the claims progress online in real time, leading to a much faster settlement.

Waggel deal with all correspondence through either live chat or via email. Streamlining of the contact process allows them to pass on cost savings to the customer and in our tests Waggel's premiums were very competitive for the cover provided, although you
should remember this was based on a £250 excess which is a lot higher than most companies (This can be reduced but the cost increases accordingly).
