For example if your claim is for £1,000, your contribution would be £99 plus 20% total £279.20.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The website is very good, well laid out and provides a huge amount of information on it's pet insurance, including side by side comparisons, details explanations of the cover, exclusions and access to policy documents.

Comprehensive frequently asked questions means that most of your queries should be answered. Sainsburys do not operate live chat so for any other enquiry you can use the free phone number provided.

The quotation system is easy to use. You have to choose the level of cover required before you are shown the quote. There is no option to see a side by side comparison of covers and premiums.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The Sainsburys pet policy is 28 pages long and includes a helpful introduction to pet insurance, contents and contents detail section.

There is no summary of cover, but the sections of cover are helpfully split into colour coded sections of what is and isn't covered.

In tests the policy wording scored 53.8 out of 100 classed as fairly difficult to read with a reading age required to be able to understand the content of between 15 - 17 years.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

20. Are there any administration charges?

There are no administration charges.

21. Are there any special discounts or promotions?

Be aware that there are some dog breeds which you can't insure under the lifetime £10,000 option and some dog breeds where an additional 20% contribution to claims is required once your pet becomes 5 years old.

The Claims service and administration appears to have improved significantly since Pinnacle took over as Insurer and the online portal system allows you to manage your pet insurance and any claims, as well as free access to a 24/7 vet health helpline.

Finally if you are a nectar member there are extra discounts available and double nectar points for any new policy.
