3. What's not covered?

Many problems are caused when a customer finds out that a particular claim is not covered. Often it's because the customer just wasn't aware of a particular exclusion, owing to the fact that they had not read or understood the policy properly.

7. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

The Bronze Silver & Gold policies do not cover the cost of putting your pet to sleep.

The Prime, Premier Champ 2.5 Champ 4.0 policies cover up to £100.

The Premier Plus and Champ 8.0 policies cover up to £150.

Note this does not include costs related to burial or cremation.

8. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

If you’re insuring 2 or more pets then you’ll receive a 10% discount off your total insurance premium. The offer applies to the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Premier and Premier Plus cover.

9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

This is where Scratch and Patch are different to almost every other pet Insurer.

Whilst the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Prime, Premier and Premier Plus policies exclude pre-existing conditions described as;

An injury or illness that:
a. Happened or first showed clinical signs
b. Has the same diagnosis or clinical
signs as an injury , illness or clinical sign your pet had,
c. Is caused by, relates to, or results from, an injury , illness or clinical
sign your pet had.

The Scratch & Patch Champ policies will quote for certain pre-existing conditions.
They are the first pet insurer to provide online screening that tells you immediately whether they can cover a condition or not.

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

All policies exclude the cost of any treatment in connection with breeding and any complications of breeding,
pregnancy, giving birth or rearing puppies or kittens.

This includes the cost of treatment in connection with false pregnancy if your pet has received treatment
for two or more episodes of false pregnancy.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

Since leaving the European Union the PETS passport no longer applies but has been replaced with an Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

Although Scratch & Patch policies have yet to be amended, they continue to pay the cost of veterinary fees for the treatment your pet has received in the PETS countries to treat injury and illness. The level of cover is the same as the level of vet fees cover under each policy.

Note there is no additional cover for Quarantine Expenses, Emergency Repatriation, or Loss of your pets health certificate.

12. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

All new policies exclude cover in respect of any illness that was noticed in the first 14 days of your pets cover.

This exclusion does not apply if your pet was insured for veterinary fees under another insurance policy up to the start date of your new policy and you are able to provide proof.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

The following standard excess is payable for each claim under the Scratch and Patch Pet Insurance policy.

Dogs under 8 = £75
Dogs over 8 = £200
Cats under 10 = £75
Cats over 10 = £200

Third Party Liability Claims £250.

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

Unlike the vast majority of Pet Insurance policies there is no additional percentage contribution towards any claim required.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The website is excellent. There is a ton of information on each product, comparisons of cover, access to policy documents. The company doesn't operate live chat but there are many frequently asked questions answered for you and if you still have a query, you can phone or email them.

The quotation system is very easy to use, the only downside is you have to chose which policy you want a quote on first and you can't get a side by side comparison. Other than that, the information is provided in an easy to read layout allowing you to make an informed decision on which policy to choose.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy wording is 25/26 pages long depending on the policy you are looking at. There is no summary of cover, but an index assists with navigation. The policy is fairy simple, if uninspiring. There is no colour coding to help differentiate between what is and isn't covered and because there are some differences in cover between the bronze, silver and gold policies, you need to read the wording carefully, to make sure a condition or exclusion applies to the policy you are interested in.

In tests the policy wording scored 49.7 out of 100 classed as fairly difficult to read with a reading age required to be able to understand the content of between 15 - 17 years.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

Scratch & Patch can be found on all the major comparison websites, except that not every policy option appears in the comparisons.

So if you want to see a breakdown of all the policy options or get a quote for a pre-existing medical condition, we recommend visiting the Scratch & Patch website direct.

18. Does the policy include a helpline?

Scratch and Patch have a dedicated 24/7 pet health Care Line operated by UK Staff.

19. What do reviews from customers say?

Scratch and Patch have been around for four years, and have received 346 reviews on trustpilot. Their rating is 4.4/5 and the vast majority of customers are happy with the service that has been provided, including the settlement of claims.

20. Are there any administration charges?

There are no administration charges.

21. Are there any special discounts or promotions?

There are currently no special discounts or promotions.

22. Overall Summary

Scratch and Patch standard premiums appear to be average for the levels of cover they offer, with the Premier Plus and Champ 8.0 being awarded a 4 star rating.

The company states it settles 97% of claims and have a dedicated UK based claims team, with the option of settlement being made direct to your vet. Claims must be notified within 60 days of any incident and invoices and completed claims forms must be returned within 12 months.

There are two big plus points to the Scratch and Patch policy.

  1. When your pet reaches the age of 8 there is no additional percentage contribution required, instead it is replaced by a fixed excess of £200. This could save you hundreds of pounds in the event of a large claim, but you may find smaller claims are swallowed up by the higher excess.
  2. Scratch and Patch are currently the only pet insurer to underwrite your pets pre-existing conditions. Whilst they cannot guarantee to cover every condition, the list is quite comprehensive. Similar to travel insurance you answer relevant questions about your pet's health and confirmation of cover and premium is instantaneous.
