Key Points you need to know about Purely Pets's policy wording

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Pet Insurance?

Your pet must be over the age of 8 weeks and in good health, free from any injury or illness.
You must be a resident of the United Kingdom, and the owner and keeper of the pet who lives with you in the UK.
You agree to take proper and reasonable care of your pet at all times.
You must take your pet for regular annual check-ups and keep your pet vaccinated:
DOGS; against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus.

Your pet must have no vicious tendencies or been trained to attack, or the cause of any accident or legal action or third party liability claims.
You must never have had any special terms imposed on a pet insurance policy covering your pet.

2. What type of policies do they offer?

Purely Pets only offer Lifetime policies. This type of policy provides a maximum yearly vet fees benefit, which is reinstated every year, provided you renew the policy.

Purely pets split the Lifetime policies into Bronze, Silver, or Gold according to how much benefit you select.

Purely Pets Bronze Policies Vet fees benefit from £1,000 - £5,000.

Purely Pets Silver Policies Vet fees benefit from £6,000 -  £10,000.

Purely Pets Gold Policies Vet fees benefit from £11,000 - £15,000.

In addition to having the lowest level of vet fee benefits, the Bronze policy also offers lower levels of cover in areas, such as complementary treatments, death or illness cover, advertising and reward and third party Liability. The Gold policies offer the highest levels of cover and we have awarded them our 4 star rating.

3. What's not covered?

Many problems are caused because policy wordings haven't been read carefully and customers were unaware of specific terms, conditions or exclusions. Our number one piece of advice is to read your pet insurance documents carefully and make sure you understand what is and isn't covered.
To this end, we have put together a list of policy exclusions, we think you should know about. Purely Pets do not cover;

  1. Preventative or elective treatments, routine examinations and treatment or any cost as a result of failure to carry out these procedures.
  2. Worming, or the killing and controlling of fleas.
  3. Routine Spaying, Castration, retained testicles, or removal of dewclaws.
  4. The cost of bathing, grooming or de-matting your pet.
  5. Behavioural problems and training – unless caused as a direct result of an insured incident.
  6. Sex hormonal problems unless directly resulting from a valid claim.
  7. Any cost of pheromone products, including DAP diffusers and Feliway and/or similarfeline facial pheromone products used in either a spray or an electric diffuser format unless pre-approved as part of a behavioural program for a maximum period of six months.
  8. Third party liability at your place of work.
  9. Treatment outside surgery hours, unless the vet confirms waiting would endanger your pet's health and then limited to a maximum of £100.
  10. Non essential hospitalisation, ambulance charges, house calls or home visits, unless your vet confirms not doing so would seriously endanger your pets life.
  11. The cost of cosmetic surgery or dentistry, or complications arising from such work, that are not directly related to an illness or injury.
  12. The cost of routine or investigative tests or diagnostic procedures, unless these are being undertaken specifically to diagnose an injury or illness due to specific existing symptoms or clinical signs and where such a diagnosis will potentially alter the course of treatment.
  13. The cost of organ transplants, fitting full or partial artificial limbs (prosthesis) with the exception of costs relating to replacement hip, elbow and or knee joints.
  14. Nutritional supplements and vitamins unless prescribed by a vet to take the place of medication and if they have a proven effect upon an injury or illness.
  15. The cost of routine blood tests including blood tests carried out before surgery, or before anaesthetic for surgery or routine blood tests before any other procedure if your pet is under 6 years of age. If your pet is over 6 years of age, these costs will only be covered if there is something in your pet's medical history to suggest your pet's health may be at risk from the anaesthetic, surgery, or procedure.
  16. Any claim as a result of a notifiable disease for example rabies.
  17. Any claim for any form of housing, cage, nappies or bedding.
  18. Your pet if it is used for guard, security, track racing, coursing, or in connection to any business, trade, profession, commercial breeding or occupation, or any policyholders who also hold a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence of any description whilst undertaking the designated activity that the SIA licence allows.
  19. Any claim under the death of your pet (illness) benefit for dogs aged 9 years and over or cats aged 11 years and over.
  20. Any medical condition caused by your pet not having received vaccinations/boosters within the last 12 months.
  21. The following breeds of dog American Bandogge/Bandogge Mastiff, American Bulldog, American/Irish Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Australian Dingo, Boerboel, Bully Kutta, Canary Dogs/Perro De/Pressa Canarios/Presa Canarios, Cane Corsos, Dogo Argentino Fila Braziliero, Japanese Tosa, Northern Inuit Dogs, Pit Bull, Pit Bull Terrier, Korean Jindo, Racing Greyhounds, Shar Pei, Tamaskan, Utonagan, Wolf, wolf hybrid or a dog crossed with any of these, or any animal registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and The Dangerous Dogs (Northern Ireland) order 1991 or Dangerous Dogs (amendment) Act 1997 or any subsequent amendments.

4. Are complementary treatments covered?

All policies cover complementary treatments. Bronze policies cover up to £500, Silver up to £750 and Gold up to £1,000.

Complementary treatments are defined as :- Complementary medicine/therapy/treatment: Acupuncture, including up to ten sessions of hydrotherapy per policy year, osteopathy, physiotherapy, behavioural treatment and chiropractic therapy recommended by your vet and carried out by a suitably qualified person that has been specifically recommended by your vet.

The policy does not cover unapproved alternative medicine or complementary medicine (including but not limited to pulsed magnetic field therapy, matrix energy field therapy, the Bowen technique, Reiki massage, and faith healing).

Behavioural treatment is only covered for new conditions diagnosed after your pet's policy has been in force for a minimum of 24 months.

Complementary treatment is included within the veterinary fee limit and is not separate.

5. Does the policy cover Prescription food and Dentistry?

Prescription food is covered up to a maximum of £100 per period of insurance, but only to dissolve bladder stones or crystals in urine. It must be prescribed by your vet and purchased from a veterinary surgery. Purely Pets will deduct 75p per tin or £1.50 per kilo for dried food for normal feeding costs. Cover is provided for a maximum of 60 days and only for one instance of the condition.

Dental treatment is covered for accidents or injury up to £500 Bronze policies, £750 Silver Policies and £1,000 Gold Policies.

Dental treatment is covered against illness for new conditions only after your pet’s policy has been in force for a minimum of 12 months and your pet has had at least one dental check with your vet in the previous 12 month period and all treatments recommended by your vet have been carried out at your own expense.

6. Are MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims covered?

Apart from the Lifetime Bronze £1,000 policy (which excludes cover for CT/MRI Scans), all other policies cover CT/MRI Scans and Cruciate Ligament claims. The amount of cover is £2,000 for cruciate claims (Bronze £1,000) and £1,500 for CT/MRI Scans.

Note - If treatment of a claim involving a cruciate(s) includes a CT or MRI scan, those costs will contribute towards this overall benefit limit. This limit forms part of the overall veterinary fee limit you chose and is not a separate veterinary fee limit. This limit is available per limb but does not reset upon each renewal.

7. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

Purely Pets cover the cost of Euthanasia up to a maximum of £100 and only if it is recommended by your vet to alleviate incurable and inhumane suffering.

Cremation costs are also covered up to £100 but only if your policy has been active for a minimum of 36 months.

8. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

You are able to insure more than one dog or cat under the same policy.

9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

Any pre-existing condition that your pet may suffer from would not be covered under a Purely Pets policy.

The definition of pre-existing condition is:  "Any illness or injury or complication directly resulting from an injury or illness, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed that has been identified or investigated by a vet or is otherwise known to you prior to the start of the insurance."

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

Purely Pets do not cover whelping, kittening, mating, pregnancy or giving birth.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

Purely Pets extend their policy to cover any pet under the Governments Pet Travel Scheme known as PETS, whilst you and they are travelling or staying in any European Member Country. The maximum stay is 180 during the policy year.

During that time, the policy is extended to cover emergency vet fees and holiday cancellation. The policy does not cover emergency repatriation, additional quarantine costs, or loss of your pets passports, as other Pet Insurance Policies do.

12. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

Any new Purely Pet Insurance policy excludes cover for accidents or injuries that occur within the first 48 hours and any illness within the first 14 days of the policy.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

The standard policy excess is £60. You do have the option to increase this up to £160, which will result in a reduction in your premium.

The excess for any claim under the dog liability section is £250.

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

Once your pet is aged 6 or over, in addition to the standard excess you are required to pay an additional 20% of any claim.

For example if your claim was for £1,000, your contribution would be £60 plus 20% £188, total £248.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The website is clearly laid out. It's easy to understand what type of policies are being offered. You can see the highlighted benefits or view a more comprehensive breakdown of covers. You also have access to the policy wording and Insurance Product Information Document.
There are a few frequently asked questions, but if you have any queries, you can phone or email Purely Pets. Alternatively once you have entered the quotation area, you have the option of Live Chat.

Obtaining a quote is straightforward. You have the option of choosing from 15 different levels of cover between £1,000 and £15,000, split into Bronze, Silver and Gold policies. You get access to a summary of cover, important policy information and the policy wording.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy wording is 26 pages long and contains a summary and explanation of cover, table of contents and list of definitions. Although there is no use of colour coding, it is reasonably straightforward to find your away around.

During tests the text scored 51.2 out of 100 which was classed as fairly difficult to read and a reader's age of 14 - 15 was required to understand the contents.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

Purely Pets are available on all the main comparison websites. However only a few of the 15 different levels of cover are available on the comparison sites and all come with a higher standard excess (£100 - £160) than you can obtain by visiting Purely Pets direct.

18. Does the policy include a helpline?

All new and existing policyholders have access to the FREE 24 hour vet helpline, provided by VetsDirect.

19. What do customer reviews say?

Purely Pets have received over 3200 reviews on Trust Pilot with an average overall score of 4.4 out of 5 and over 90% were extremely happy with the service they have received.

Customers that gave less than satisfactory reviews appeared to be split into two camps. Firstly some customers were unhappy with slow claims settlement and poor communication. The second group of customers had some issues logging in to the online portal to view or print off their documents.

20. Are there any administration charges?

There are no administration charges.

21. Are there any special discounts or promotions?

Currently there are no special discounts or promotions.

22. Overall Summary

Purely Pets are competitive for the cover they provide, and continues to be the case for older pets as well. Don't forget there is no upper age limit for pets they will quote on.

They offer customers a 24 hour vet helpline and a policy management portal, including the ability to start and track your claim.
The Purely Pet policy is flexible allowing you not only to choose the exact amount of vet fees cover (£1,000 - £15,000) but also the amount of excess (£60 - £160) and whether you want to include the 20% co payment from day one (which reduces the premium by about 16%).

The vast majority of customers appear more than happy with Purely Pets, the only complaints being slow claims settlement and sometimes not being able to gain access to the management portal.

Purely Pets will never guarantee a claim over the phone until they are in receipt of a completed claim form, and full medical history, which must be returned within 60 days of the treatment. This may lead to a delay in claims settlement especially as "Every claim will be reviewed by an internal pet claims assessor and compared to charges for the same or similar treatment within the same area to ensure that the treatment and veterinary fees are reasonable, necessary, essential, and not excessive."

Levels of cover are mostly on a par with other Insurers, but note the levels of benefit in respect of MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims are lower than market average and certain benefits are not covered until you have been with them for at least 12 months. For example there is a 12 month waiting period before dental treatment due to illness is covered. A 36 month wait until cremation costs are cover and only after a minimum of 24 months is behavioural treatment covered.

Finally Complementary treatments, Special diets, specialised diagnostics – CT/MRI Scans, cruciate injury treatment and Dental cover are all included within the overall veterinary fee allowance selected and are not separate limits.
