9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

Petplan do not cover your pet's pre-existing medical conditions. Make sure you read the policy definition carefully, which defines a pre-existing condition as:

"Any injury or illness that happened or first showed clinical signs before a) your pet’s cover started or b) the section was added to your insurance.
• Any injury or illness that has the same diagnosis as an injury, illness or clinical sign your pet had before a) your pet’s cover started or b) the section was added to your insurance.
• Any injury or illness that has the same clinical signs as an injury, illness or clinical sign your pet had before a) your pet’s cover started or b) the section was added to your insurance.
• Any injury or illness that is caused by, relates to, or results from, an injury, illness or clinical sign your pet had before a) your pet’s cover started, or b) the section was added to your insurance.
This applies in all cases regardless of whether:
- The injury or illness presents in the same, or different parts of your pet’s body.
- You knew, when starting cover for your pet, that you would need to make a claim for the clinical sign/injury/illness."

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

The policy covers treatment connected to false pregnancies, provided your pet has not already suffered more than 2 episodes of false pregnancy. There is no cover for spaying or neutering.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

Petplan will cover your pet abroad under the Governments PETS scheme, for up to 90 days in any one policy year.

Whilst abroad, your pet will be covered for any emergency vet fees that occur. In addition Petplan also cover Holiday Cancellation, Emergency Repatriation, Quarantine Expenses, and Loss of your pets health certificate.

12. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

Under all Petplan policies, there is no cover for any illness, or death caused by illness that occurred, or was noticed in the first 14 days of any new policy.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

Most Pet Insurers charge a standard excess for each claim that is made and PetPlan is no exception.

All Claims - Dogs £100 Cats £80

Complementary Treatment - Dogs £75 Cats £65

Dog Liability - £250

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

When your dog reaches it's 7th birthday and your cat it's 10th birthday, you will be required to contribute an additional 20% of the cost of any claim, in addition to the fixed excess.

For example a claim for £1,000 would require a contribution by you of (£100 +20% £180) £280.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The Petplan website is nicely laid out. Plenty of information is provided on each type of insurance, including a breakdown and comparison of the covers. The frequently asked question section is very comprehensive, answering a multitude of different queries that you may have.

Once you become a policyholder, you have the option to register online which allows you to view your pet’s cover details, download your policy documents and check payments. You are also able to submit, manage and track claims from your dashboard.

The online quote system is easy to use and it is fairly easy to switch between the two types of policy being offered, so you can compare the cover and the costs before making any decision.

Petplan do not operate a live chat system, but you can email or phone them with any queries.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy at 24 pages long, doesn't include a summary of cover, or an index to assist with navigation.

On the plus side the layout is OK and specific conditions are explained in a lot more detail than some other policies. On the down side, this does mean a lot of text to read and our tests backed this up, scoring the wording 57.9 out of 100 which is classed as fairly difficult to read, with a reading age of between 14 - 15 required to understand the meaning of the policy wording.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

Petplan are not listed on any comparison sites. To obtain a quote visit Petplan direct.

18. Does the policy include a helpline?

The only helpline Petplan offer is a Pet Bereavement Helpline run by the Blue Cross.

19. What do customer reviews say?

Petplan claim on their website that 97% of claims received are paid and 90% of those within 5 working days, upon receipt of the relevant paperwork.

With the odd exception this appears to be backed up by customer reviews. Petplan have received over 5500 reviews on trustpilot with an average rating of 4.6/5 and over 5400 reviews on Feefo with an average rating of 4.4/5. The majority of customers are extremely satisfied with the service they received from Petplan and this includes claims.

The minor number of complaints relate to administration errors or delays and a few cases where the customer feels Petplan have been harsh with the exclusion of conditions, once they have reviewed a pet's medical notes.

20. Are there any administration charges?

There are no administration charges.

21. Are there any special discounts or promotions?

Petplan offer new policyholders a 10% discount for buying online.

22. Overall Summary

Petplan have been around for a long time and the majority of customers are happy with the service they receive from them.

Customers are reassured that there is no penalty for claiming, but in tests we found their premiums expensive, when compared to competitors.

On the plus side Petplan pays out around £5 Million every week in claims with the vast majority settled quickly and without fuss, which at the end of the day is what pet insurance is all about.

A few points to note with PetPlan pet insurance.

The Essential time limited policy 12 month claims clock, starts ticking from when a condition is first noticed or diagnosed, rather than when it is first treated. So if you decide to wait before treatment remember this eats into the 12 month limit.

There is no financial assistance for putting your pet to sleep, or with the burial or cremation.

There is no death benefit for some "select dog breeds" once they reach the age of 5, but there is no list of which breeds these apply to.

Petplan are selective in the breeds they will provide Lifetime cover to. As an example they will not insure a Great Dane, or a Leonberger that are over the age of 5.

You are also unable to get a quote for a mongrel dog, or crossbreed unless you know the two main breeds.

We will leave you with the feedback left by a recent customer on Feefo "I do know from experience that Petplan are THE best for paying and doing it quickly, but you pay for that of course. I can afford it so would never use anyone else".
