Who offers the best Siamese Cat Insurance?

News

We have spent some time researching the cat insurance market to find out who offers the best Siamese Cat Insurance. There are quite a few factors to take into account, such as the overall health of the breed, the age of your Siamese, known medical problems and how much you should insure them for.

To answer these questions we need to understand a bit about the breed itself.

Overview of the Siamese Cat

Siamese are known for their sociable nature and are usually affectionate and enjoy being with people but can have a special bond with one person. Some Siamese are extremely vocal, with a loud, low-pitched voice, and persistent in demanding attention. They are active, intelligent, and playful, Good for families.

Siamese are intelligent Cats who love to interact with their owners.

The History of Siamese cats

It is believed the Siamese originated in Siam and are one of the oldest breeds of domesticated cats in the world. Siamese cats were owned by the Royal Family of Siam (now Thailand), and were used to guard the ancient temples. Only royalty or noblemen were allowed to own them.

Siamese are the stars of many myths and legends. The first Siamese were imported into the UK in 1884 by a Mr Owen Gould. More Siamese were then imported into the UK and the breed became ever more popular. The Siamese Cat Club (still exists today) was founded in 1901.

Are Siamese Cats prone to Health Issues?

Siamese cats do suffer from known health issues. Not all of them will get any, or all of these diseases, but it's important to be aware of them if you're considering this breed.

The most common ailment in Siamese cats is Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) - This disease causes the photoreceptor cells to deteriorate over time, which eventually leads to blindness.

Cats generally suffer from two forms of PRA. The first is known as early onset or inherited (known as retinal dysplasia. This can be diagnosed in kittens around the age of three months.

The second is late onset PRA which usually occurs in adult cats between the ages of two and five years. In most cases complete loss of vision will occur within one - two years. Although there is currently no cure, the cost of consultancy fees and an Electroretinogram used to detect this condition is in the region of £400 - £500.

Gastrointestinal problems - This covers a wide range of issues such as Intestinal Parasites, Hairballs, Constipation,Foreign Bodies, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Food Allergy/Intolerance and Cancer. Costs will range from a few hundred pounds to several thousand, depending on the severity of the issue. For example a Gastrointestinal endoscopy+ biopsies will cost around £1,500. Even chronic diarrhoea or severe vomiting can cost up to £2,000 to investigate and diagnose.

Neoplastic problems - Common in all pets and the chances of suffering with Neoplasia increases with age. For example over 30% of all cats over the age of 10 will die of some form of cancer. The majority of feline cancers happen in cats between the ages of 10 - 15 years of age, with the exception of lymphoma, which mostly occurs in younger cats.

Investigation costs for cancer can cost anywhere between £400 - £1,400. Drug therapy £1,200 - £4,000 and radiation therapy from £1,000 - £5,000. If you are unlucky to own a Siamese that suffers from cancer, you can see the costs quickly start to mount up.

Mucopolysaccharidosis & Gangliosidosis - Lysosomal storage diseases, are two of the more prevalent inherited diseases in cats and commonly found in cats with Siamese ancestry. The conditions causes felines to accumulate a large amount of cell growth which take over the cells of the skin, liver, white blood cells and bone marrow, causing the cat to develop issues such as facial deformities, skeletal abnormalities, bone degeneration, paralysis, stunted growth, dwarfism mental disorders, corneal clouding, enlarged liver, thickening of the heart valves and reduced flexibility.

Mucopolysaccharidosis is often diagnosed in Cats between the ages of 1 - 3 years, whereas Gangliosidosis has an age of onset during later adulthood and resembles Parkinson disease with symptoms including an unsteady gait and cardiomyopathy.

At present there is no specific way of treating these disorders, but gene replacement therapy and enzyme replacement therapy have shown promising results. Gene or enzyme replacement therapies are executed through a bone marrow transplant and can be rather expensive. Bear in mind that not all Pet Insurers will cover Gene replacement therapy.

You can minimise any health problems by making sure your cat comes from a registered breeder and that the parents have been tested for the common hereditary diseases mentioned above. However you can see from some of the costs, that it is important to take out cat insurance with the right levels of vet fees benefit, sufficient to cover all eventualities.

What is the Personality and Temperament of Siamese cat's?

Siamese cats are known for being quite vocal, sometimes sounding a bit like babies. This is due to their desire to be near people, or other cats. They occasionally suffer from depression or separation anxiety if left alone for too long. It’s for this reason that Siamese cats are often bought in pairs so that they can keep each other company.

They are extrovert, intelligent, playful, and social, enjoy their family, and will follow you around, chattering all the time as they like to be where the action is. Left alone too long and the Siamese is likely to find its own entertainment by emptying the tissue box or fishing in your aquarium!

They are not really known as outdoor cats, and whilst fresh air is important, they are just as happy roaming your property as house cats. This is probably no bad thing as Siamese cats are a magnet for thieves.

A Siamese cat is suitable for some apartments, and houses with small gardens, but happy in a town or country environment. Happy as house cats but don't like to be alone so can be quite vocal at times.

Taking Care of your Siamese Cat

The Siamese has short hair and is not a heavy shedder. Grooming should be fun so use a soft brush and groom once a week. Siamese cats love attention and love to play, puzzle toys, scratching and play posts are right up the Siamese cats street.

Siamese kittens can be fed up to 3 times a day, until they reach about six months old, feeding can be reduced to twice a day. It is best to feed wet food, with dry food as a supplementary.

The Siamese Cat with other pets and children.

Siamese get on with other pets if introduced when young. They like company so can be happy with dogs and other pets. Introduce dogs carefully as the dog may think cats are for chasing.

If raised with children and socialised from a young age a Siamese cat will be happy and love children in its own family. OK with small children, but better for families with children over 10, Playtime should be supervised as they can be hurt by over boisterous children. Most problems arise from poor socialisation and boredom so include children in its care.

6 Facts You Didn't Know About the Siamese Cat!

What does it cost to insure a Siamese Cat?

As we mentioned earlier there are several factors that are taken into account when calculating the cost of cat insurance. The area in which you live (City vets generally charge more than country vets and as a result premiums are more expensive), the breed of cat, the age and the purchase cost are all relevant cost factors.

The lifespan of a Siamese cat is around 15 - 20 years and a well bred pedigree kitten can cost anywhere between £300 - £1,000.

A common complaint about cat insurance is the unexpected yearly increase in premiums at renewal time. Whilst cat insurance is generally cheaper than dog insurance, the reason for the yearly increase is the same. As your cat gets older, the chance of him or her requiring medical treatment also increases and Insurers have to take this into account when calculating renewal premiums.

To help you understand how this process works and what to expect price wise as your cat gets older, we have produced a graph illustrating just how premiums increase over time.

The criteria we used in the graph were based on a female pedigree Siamese cat costing £500 and a combined market average of all Lifetime policies who offered a vet fee limit of £2,000 or more.

You will notice that for the first 4 years of your cats life, average premiums remain pretty constant. When your Siamese reaches the age of 10 premiums have doubled and by the time your cat reaches the ripe old age of 14, premiums have doubled again before flattening out.

Who offers the best Siamese Cat Insurance?

By how much does each type of Siamese cat policy differ in cost?

It can be a tough choice deciding which type of cat insurance to choose. Can you cope with shorter term cover and manage to cover any longer term bills yourself, or do you want the peace of mind that a lifetime policy gives you?

A big factor in the decision making process is cost. So to help you, the graph below illustrates the differences in cost between accident only insurance, a time limited policy, a maximum benefit and a lifetime policy. Once again we have taken a market average of all policies in each category offering at least £2,000 of vet fees cover, based on a 5 year old female Siamese Cat.

If you do not understand the exact differences between each policy, don't worry, we have put together a Pet Insurance Guide that clearly explains the pro's and con's of each type of policy, as well as a detailed explanation of the different scenarios a pet insurance policy can cover.

Who offers the Best Siamese Cat Insurance?

This is the bit you have probably been waiting for! Our article so far has given you an idea of how prices increase as your pet gets older and the difference in average prices between the levels of cover and type of cat insurance policies on offer.

Whilst we are unable to recommend specific policies based on individual circumstances, after careful research, we are able to show you the best policies, based upon a set criteria, our own ratings and reviews and of course price. We research the whole market, not just those that can be found on comparison websites and each quote is checked directly on the Pet Insurers own website.

Price is important, but you need to be careful and not choose a policy just because it is cheap. You may find that the cheapest policy doesn't offer enough cover and you end up having to move Insurers or not having a claim covered. We hope our recommendations offer a balance of cover, service and price.

Our predefined criteria was based on a pedigree female Siamese cat costing £500 and living indoors in the West Midlands area. Quotes are based on a one year old, a six year old and a ten year old and highlight the best policies that we rated 3 stars or higher in our review process.
