Leisure Guard Cat Insurance Review
  • Policies must provide cover for all core sections and all secondary sections.
  • Vets Fees - Policies must provide a minimum maximum benefit of £6,000, or £4,000 per condition and cover either;
  1. A maximum benefit per condition no renewal guarantee.
  2. A maximum limit per condition with a lifetime renewal guarantee; or
  3. A maximum benefit per year with a lifetime renewal guarantee.
  • Cruciate Ligaments - Damage to, or disease of the cruciate ligament is a common problem in animals. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £4,000.
  • MRI/CT Scans - If your pet suffers from seizures, paralysis or back problems, your vet may recommend an MRI scan. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £2,000.
  • Euthanasia - If your pet needs to be put to sleep to alleviate further suffering, policies must cover this. A policy must offer at least £100 to cover the cost of euthanasia.
  • Complementary treatments ? The industry average for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy is £1,000. Five star policies have at least this amount of cover.
  • Prescribed Food - All five star policies must cover the cost of prescription food (to treat bladder stones) up to at least £100
  • Dental treatment - Dental treatment for accidents of at least £500.
  • Loss of your Pet - The industry average benefit for loss of your pet due to accident, illness, theft or straying is £1,000. All policies must offer at least this amount.
  • Compulsory excesses - The industry average for the age at which additional compulsory excesses are charged is 6. All five star policies will not charge an additional compulsory excess until at least this age.
  • Five-star policies may provide additional service and cover benefits over and above standard policies.
  • Premiums are competitive in relation to the cover provided.
  • Five-Star policies have clear and consumer friendly, wording and explanations of cover.

Key Points you need to know about Leisure Guard Pet's policy wording

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Pet Insurance?

Your pet must be owned by you and either wear a collar and ID tag at all times or be micro-chipped.
You promise that your pet is sound and in perfect health and does not have any vicious tendencies prior to the start of any insurance.
Your pet must have a general health check and subsequent treatment recommended by the vet every 12 months.
Your pet must be regularly wormed and protected from infections or contagious disease by keeping it isolated.
You agree to vaccinate your dog against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and kennel cough when entering a boarding kennel or show and feline infections such as enteritis and cat flu for cats.
Your dog must be kept in a secure area. Any fences and enclosures must be capable of retaining the dog and all gates, openings must be kept secure.
When your dog is on a public highway, it must be on a collar and lead under control.

 

 

2. What type of policies do they offer?

Leisure Guard offer two levels of cover;

Standard Annual - vet fees up to £3,500 limited to 12 months

Standard Lunar - vet fees up to £4,000 limited to 12 months

Lifetime Annual - vet fees up to £3,500 per year reinstated annually

Lifetime Lunar - vet fees up to £4,000 per year reinstated annually.

Annual policies run for 365 days from the commencement date; automatically renews annually.
Lunar policies run for and premiums are collected on equal periods of 28 days; automatically renews every 28 days.

3. What's not covered?

his is a list of important exclusions - Leisure Guard pet policies do not cover;

  1. Routine, Cosmetic, or preventative treatments whether recommended by your vet or not.
  2. Vaccinations, Spaying, Castration or the removal of retained testicles or umbilical hernias.
  3. De-matting, grooming or nail clipping.
  4. The cost of killing or controlling fleas.
  5. Diagnostic tests unless there is a clear symptom or clinical sign present.
  6. Any costs resulting from an injury or illness that is congenital.
  7. Costs for treatment of conditions arising from your pet being overweight, except weight gain as a result of a diagnosed illness.
  8. Treatment for behavioural problems not related to illness shown by your pet.
  9. The treatment of or any actions taken to control, prevent or suppress actual influenza, or the fear, or threat of, or any derivation or variant thereof.
  10. Claims for your pet being pregnant, breeding or in relation to giving birth including false pregnancies.
  11. The cost of buying or hiring equipment (including baskets, cages, bedding or litter).
  12. Any fees for surgical equipment that can be used more than once.
  13. Any costs relating to prosthetic limbs and cost in relation to the fitting of a prosthetic limb except hip and/or elbow replacements.
  14. The use of your pet to carry on any trade, business or profession or use of the insured pet for hire or reward.
  15. Any costs caused by your dog’s interaction with other animals, or worrying sheep.
  16. Any costs caused by a pet straying, escaping, damaging property, attacking the general public or other pets, if the pet has a history of doing this.
  17. Any claim as a result of any sexually transmitted disease, rabies, Aujesky’s disease, leishmaniasis, epidemic outbreaks whether vaccinated against or not, or any notifiable disease.
  18. All claims arising as a result of your pet undergoing organ transplants.
  19. The following breeds of dog, American Bandogge/Bandogge Mastiff, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Argentine Dogo, Australian Dingo, Canary Dog, Cane Corso, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Dogo Argentino, Dogue Brasileiro, Fila Brasileiro, Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Korean Jindo, Perro De Presa Canario, Pit Bull Mastiff, Pit Bull Terrier, Presa Canario, Racing Greyhound, Saarloos Wolfhound, Tosa Inu, Wolf Hybrid, Raccoon Dog, Any dogs that are cross breeds/types of the above.

4. Are complementary treatments covered?

Leisure Guard will pay up to the vet fees limit for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathic or herbal medicines, provided they are carried out by your vet or a suitable qualified person.

5. Does the policy cover Prescription food and Dentistry?

Leisure Guard do not cover any form of dental work.

Leisure Guard will contribute 30p per cat and 60p per dog to assist the cost difference between your pet's normal diet and any special diet prescribed to dissolve bladder stones or cystals in urine up to a maximum of £100.

Leisure Guard will also contribute;

up to £90 per day for house/out of hours calls

up to £40 per day towards hospitalisation fees

up to £20 towards the cost of interpretation fees

Up to £250 towards hydrotherapy costs

Up to £45 per day for consultation fees for each separate visit as a result of an insured condition (increased to £90 per day for referral vets)

6. Are MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims covered?

All policies cover MRI/CT Scans and cruciate ligament claims up to the vet fees limit.

7. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

Leisure Guard pet insurance does not cover the cost of putting your pet to sleep, help with burial or cremation costs.

8. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

Leisure Guard encourage you to insure more than one pet under the same policy and offer a 10% discount if you do.

9. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

All policies excludes treatment for any injury or illness that occurred or showed clinical signs of injury or illness or reoccurred before cover starts.

10. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

Leisure Guard do not cover any claim in relation to your pet being pregnant or in relation to giving birth including false pregnancies.

11. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

Leisure Guard do not cover your pet whilst abroad.

12. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

There is no cover in the event of your pet suffering an illness within the first 14 days of the policy.

13. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

The excess is Dogs Standard Policy £110, Lifetime Policy £135 and Cats Standard Policy £125, Lifetime Policy £130.

14. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

In addition to the standard excess, you are required to pay an additional 5% of any claim, from the commencement of the policy.

15. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

There is no link to Leisure Guard Pet Insurance from the main website. The only way to find it is via a search engine.

Once in the site, if you click the pet insurance logo or the home button, you are taken to the main website and there is no link back.

The website does explain the differences between cover and some of the benefits you can expect under each policy. Access to the policy wording is also provided prior to any quotation. There are a few answers to common questions.

Leisure Guard do not operate a live chat system, but you are able to phone them up with any queries.

The quote system is easy to use and the nice feature is it remembers your details if you leave for any reason.

16. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy wording is 12 pages long, but doesn't include a summary of cover or an index to help with navigation. However each section is clearly marked with a coloured heading.

During our tests the policy wording scored 52.3 out of a 100, which is classed as fairly difficult to read. The average reading age was 14 - 15 which means that a person with a reading age of 15-17 years should be able to understand the policy.

17. Is the Insurer listed on comparison sites?

Leisure Guard Pet Insurance does not appear on any of the comparison sites. Visit their site direct to get a quote.

We were unable to find any meaningful customer reviews.

20. Are there any administration charges?

If you wish to make a change to your policy after the 14 day cooling off period, Leisure Guard charge a £10 administration fee for any amendments.

If you wish to cancel you policy after the 14 day cooling off period, Leisure Guard charge a £10 cancellation fee. No refund of any amount of £25 or less will be made.

21. Are there any special discounts or promotions?

Leisure Guard offer a 20% introductory discount for new policyholders.

22. Overall Summary

Overall Leisure Guard Pet Insurance is cheap, although the benefits are lower than some other policies.

Lunar policies renew every 28 days and the benefits are slightly better than the annual policy.

Leisure Guard should not be purchased if you plan to take your pet abroad, as they do not provide any cover.

Claims can be accepted up to 12 months after occurrence, but Leisure Guard will not accept any liability for a claim until they have received a fully completed claim form, detailed veterinary account and full medical history.

Leisure Guard exclude any condition that is congenital. This is a condition that exists since birth but doesn’t necessarily show symptoms right away. If your pet may suffer from hereditary conditions, this might not be the insurance for you.
