Chihuahuas may be small dogs, but they are certainly not short on character. That is one of the reasons they are becoming increasingly popular.
When you live with a cheeky chihuahua you get great company and a dog that you can take practically anywhere. Plus, they are nowhere near as expensive to keep as a larger dog like an Alsatian would be.
But, like all pets, they can get sick or hurt. Should that happen, the vet´s bills can still be high. Sometimes beyond your means. Setting a badly fractured leg is still going to cost thousands regardless of the size of the leg being operated on.
So, even though your pet is small, it still makes sense to track down and buy a comprehensive pet insurance policy for your Chihuahua.
After reading through, breaking down and fully understanding every single pet insurance policy that is available in the UK, we have learned a thing or two.
Using that knowledge we have come up with this short, but comprehensive, pet insurance buying guide that specifically looks at buying a policy for a small breed like Chihuahua´s.

Of the above items, the most important by far is the vet bills. So, let's look at buying a policy that will cover those first.
Even though your dog is small the vet bills can still mount up. Most procedures cost the same regardless of the size of the animal that is being treated.
Although you will likely end up paying less for your dog´s drugs. Simply because the size of the dose needed is normally based on the weight of the animal being treated.
Regardless, it is just as easy to rack up a vet bill for a Chihuahua running into the hundreds, even the thousands, as it is for a Labrador Retriever.
Unfortunately, many years of interbreeding has allowed serious health conditions to be passed on down through the generations. Most pedigree breeds have at least some hereditary conditions that you need to keep an eye out for. Knowing what the symptoms are will enable you to spot problems early, so you can get the treatment as soon as possible.
When buying your pet insurance policy, it is wise to determine how much coverage is included for these and other conditions. Here are the ones you need to pay particular attention to when researching the policy you will buy for your pet.
Dental decay - Chihuahuas and most other small dog breeds are very prone to tooth decay. Tartar builds up quickly and if it is not removed periodically the gums recede and all their teeth fall out. This is partly because it is hard for small dogs to chew on things in the way larger dogs do. An action which removes most of the tartar and stops the build-up. The cost of tooth-cleaning varies greatly between areas, but on average you will pay about £220. Not all Pet Insurers will cover the cost of dental problems.
Retained baby teeth - around 6% of Chihuahuas retain their baby teeth. Solving this problem requires surgery. The minimum bill for this is £290. Not all Pet Insurers will cover this issue, so you should read the policy carefully.
Retained testicles - about 4% of these little dogs need surgery to bring their testicles down.
Epilepsy - this nasty condition can usually be controlled using drugs. But working out what is going on and coming up with the right drug regime usually takes a while. The costs can easily rack up. It is not uncommon for owners to pay around £2,000, during the initial stages of treatment.
Joint issues - surprisingly for a small dog they are very vulnerable to joint injuries. This is largely because their muscular-skeletal structures are fine and delicate. It does not take much for them to suffer strains and sprains.
Dislocating kneecaps (luxating patellas) - they are more prone than other breeds to dislocating their kneecaps, an injury that is difficult and time-consuming to heal. If the condition is caught early enough, surgery is an option. But it typically costs £1,200, often a lot more, to successfully fix this potentially painful issue and stop your dog from going lame.
Tracheal collapse - many small breeds are vulnerable to their windpipes starting to collapse. If your dog's breathing is affected, the only solution is surgery, which is expensive.
Legg-Perthes disease (aka Legg-Calve-Perthes) - this condition causes the ball part of the hip joint to disintegrate. It is a form of arthritis that tends to afflict very young dogs. Rest can work. But, often, surgery to remove the damaged part of the joint is necessary. Provided it is done early enough your dog can live an active and normal life. It is not the kind of surgery you can save up for. Typically, it costs from £1200.
As you can see the conditions these lovely little dogs are prone to are not cheap to cure. So, if you have a dog that has health problems, the right insurance policy can easily pay for itself.
People tend to assume that they do not need third party insurance if they have a Chihuahua. They figure that such a small dog cannot do much damage. Even if they bite. In reality, this is not the best way to think about things. They can be a bit on the aggressive side and if they bite they do hurt and can tear. Plus, there is always a risk of the bite becoming infected.
It is also all too easy for someone to trip over a little dog and break something. There is also the danger of them causing a traffic accident if they run away. So, in most cases, it makes sense to buy 3rd party insurance for a small dog.
Naturally, nobody likes to think of their dog dying. But when it does happen you need to be able to pay the bill. If you think you will struggle to do this, it is wise to opt for a policy that includes coverage for these costs.

Our research indicates that most owners of Chihuahua's can expect to pay between £100 and £350 for an annual dog insurance policy (Based on a 5 year old male dog). Of course, exactly how much you will pay depends on the age, size, type and amount of cover, where you live and of course how much you paid for your pet.

Typically the older your dog gets the more you will pay. This is the cause of many complaints, by customers who perceive annual increases in premium as unfair. Similar to humans, as your dog gets older, they are more likely to need medical care. It is just a fact of life and remember that dogs age about 7 - 8 times quicker than humans do.
Pet Insurers are a business like any other and need to factor this in when calculating premiums. As a result premiums tend to increase year on year.
Using the market average cost of a lifetime pet insurance policy, the Graph below demonstrates the increase in premiums as your pet gets older. Chihuahuas are quite long lived and it is not unusual for them to reach 15 - 18 years of age.
By the time your Chihuahua has turned six, premiums have increased by 50%. By the time your Chi has reached the age of 10 premiums have almost doubled. There are main two reasons. We have mentioned the first reason that your pet is likely to need more medical assistance. The second reason, is that when your pet reaches the age of between 8 - 10 years, there is a dramatic reduction in the number of Pet Insurers that will actually quote for dogs of that age.
This is another important reason to insure your Chihuahua as early as possible. The majority of Insurers will continue to Insure your pet past their normal cut off date if you insure with them when your pet is of a young age.
Knowing this makes choosing the right Insurer early on in your Chihuahua's life absolutely crucial!
