You must be the owner and keeper of the pet and not have any convictions, or prosecutions pending for theft, or dishonesty, or ever had a pet policy declared void or cancelled.
Your pet must be older than 8 weeks of age and in good health, not showing signs of injury or illness.
You must take care of your pet, which includes arranging and paying for any treatment normally recommended by your vet to prevent or reduce the risk of illness or injury, including routine dentistry.
Your pet must be vaccinated against Dogs: distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus. Cats:
feline infectious enteritis, feline leukaemia and cat flu.
PETtrac offer two types of policy accident only and accident and illness.
Both are lifetime policies which means that provided the policy is renewed the vet fees benefit will be reinstated and can continue being used to settle existing treatments.
Each policy provides a maximum benefit in respect of vet fees, you can choose from £3,000, £6,000 or £12,000 limits.
Many complaints arise because the pet insurance policy wasn't read carefully enough and customers were unaware of specific exclusions, or excesses and co-insurance payments for example.
That is why reading the policy document and familiarising yourself with the cover is so important. To assist, we have highlighted important exclusions, we think you should know about. PETtrac do not cover;
PETtrac policies cover complementary treatments up to 25% of the vet fees limit, which depends on the level of cover selected.
Complementary treatments include Physiotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy, hydrotherapy, chiropractic and
alternative medicines recommended by or carried out by your vet or a trained person.
The accident and illness policies also cover behavioural treatments up to £200.
The PETtrac Accident and Illness policy covers clinical diets up to £200, described as A clinically formulated diet prescribed by your vet as part of your pet’s treatment for a specific condition. Note this does not cover costs of a clinical diet prescribed for weight reduction.
The accident and illness policy covers dentistry up to the vets fees limit caused by an injury or illness.
The accident and illness policy covers MRI/CT scans and cruciate ligament claims up to the vet fees limit.
All policies cover the cost of euthanasia, including cremation and burial costs up to £200.
You can insure up to 5 pets under the same policy (dogs or cats). There is a 10% multi pet discount available for insuring more than one pet.
Pettrac do not cover your pets pre-existing medical conditions. Pet Guard describe pre-existing conditions as;
"Any condition, or complication directly resulting from or relating to that condition that has been identified or investigated by a vet or that has the same diagnosis, clinical signs or symptoms as a condition prior to the start of this insurance, regardless of the areas affected in or on your pet’s body".
PETtrac will not cover any pet used for breeding or any treatment associated with pregnancy or giving birth.
Pettrac give you the option to extend your policy so your pet can join you on a European holiday.
If you are plan to take your pet on a European holiday under the Pet Passport scheme, this cover option will extend your UK cover to EU countries. It will cover you for as many trips as you like providing each trip away from the UK is no longer than 60 days.
In addition to the extension of vet fees cover whilst abroad, the policy also covers, emergency repatriation expenses, additional quarantine costs, loss of your pets health care certificate and repeat worming treatments.
There are no cover for treatments, or death caused by an illness that occurred within the first 14 days of any new policy.
The standard policy excess for all Pettrac policies is £100. In addition there are specific excesses for certain sections of the policy.
Holiday cancellation – the first £75 of any claim.
Accidental damage to third party property – the first £75 of any claim.
Accidental damage to pet accessories – the first £50 of any claim.
Emergency expenses – the first £50 of any claim.
Third party liability – the first £250 of any property damage claim.
When your pet turns 8 (cat or dog) The excess increases to the first £100 plus 20% of the remaining cost of treatment.
For example, if your claim is for £1,000, your contribution would be £100 plus 20% totalling £280.
The Pettrac pet insurance website is simple to use. A page explains the cover options, allowing you to compare benefits, read the eligibility criteria and policy wording before proceeding with a quote.
There is no frequently answered questions section and PETtrac don't operate live chat, but if you have a question, you can either phone or email them.
The quotation system is quick and easy to use. The only downside is that you don't get a side by side comparison of costs/cover and although there is easy access to the policy, once you made your choice, you are not provided with a breakdown of cover or sums insured.
The 27 page policy wording is neatly laid out and easy to follow. It includes a summary of cover, useful table of contents and helpful definitions. Sections are easy to read and understand. Perhaps no surprise then that it scored 62 out of 100 in our tests, which classed the text as average reading and that could be read and understood by anyone with a reading age of 11 - 13.

PETtrac policies provide excellent levels of cover and we have awarded 5 stars to the £6,000 and £12,000 limit policies to reflect that fact.
The £6,000 limit policy is competitive in comparison to other policies that provide similar levels of cover. The £12,000 is more expensive, but this is to be expected based on the high level of vet fees cover it offers.
Unlike many Pet Insurers, PETtrac will cover working dogs (A dog that is being used for shooting or hunting; to work with livestock; or to perform tasks to assist a human companion, including therapy-dogs.)
