  • Make sure your passport is in date, especially as some countries require that you have at least six months to run on it.
  • Check to see if you, or anyone travelling with you, requires a visa.
  • Remember to apply for your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) it's free.
  • Take out travel insurance as soon as possible and as close to the time you have booked your holiday. That way you won't lose out if your holiday has to be unexpectedly cancelled.
  • Check with your GP to see if you need any vaccinations and make sure you have a repeat prescription for any medicines you need to take with you.
  • Make sure you have ordered the relevant currency or travellers cheques and notify your credit card company that you are going abroad, so they don't block your card.
  • Make copies of all essential documentation in case they are lost or stolen
  • When booking your Travel Insurance make sure your travel dates are correct, as this could invalidate your whole policy. Remember your policy must cover the entire duration of the trip.
  • Make sure your policy covers any activities that you wish to carry out whilst on holiday.
  • Remember to declare any pre-existing medical conditions.
  • If you are travelling to Australia and require medical treatment of any kind, most Travel Insurers will require you to register for MEDICARE. This is the equivalent of the NHS and they have a reciprocal agreement with the UK, lowering medical costs for the Insurance Company. If you don't do this your claim may be rejected.
  • If you are travelling to New Zealand and require medical treatment of any kind, most Travel Insurers will require you to make sure that as a UK Passport holder any treatment is carried out under the reciprocal agreement with the UK. If not your Insurer may reject your claim.
  • Reduce your premiums, by increasing the excess or removing sections of cover insured elsewhere.
  • Use our travel insurance checklist to decide what cover you need.
  • Make sure you review your travel insurance policy carefully.
