Who are World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads started life as a travel blog, but in 2000, they saw a gap in the market for travel insurance. World Nomads core concept of being able to buy a travel insurance policy with the freedom to extend it and extend it again as you needed it, was the first of its kind. We've rated World Nomads Explorer Policy with four stars, find out why we ranked the policy this way in our review and look at key benefits for World Nomad customers.

This policy would also be good for anyone looking to purchase Annual Multi Trip Insurance who are away for longer than 90 days in any one period, Worldnomads offers great flexibility there too, essentially you can travel for trip periods of any length within the policy period, cover just stops when you return to the UK and re-commences when you are back in your destination country.  If you are lucky enough to have holiday homes all over the world, you can add specific countries to provide a more bespoke solution.

Travel insurance from World Nomads is underwritten by Millstream Underwriting Limited on behalf of AWP P&C SA.

World Nomads policy document is 45 pages long and as with all policy documents takes a lot of reading, however on their website you will find a very handy help section where you can type in your questions and receive a list of answers.  We've taken some of the important points and broken them down for you in our review of World Nomads below.

Key Points you need to know about Worldnomads.com's policy wording

1. What is the age/classification of a child on the policy?

Children are your dependents travelling with you, aged under 21 years and in full time education.

2. What are the policy age limits?

Both the Standard and Explorer Policies have an Age limit of 64 years.

3. What are the policy Trip Duration limits?

Both the Standard and Explorer Policies have a maximum duration of 550 days.  These policies work slightly differently than most, because there is no Single or Annual Trip, you can return home at your own expense, any number of times, and this wont affect the duration/end date of cover.  All that happens is that cover ceases until you return to your destination, any treatment or incidents that occurr in the UK would not be covered.

World Nomads does state you can extend your policy when you are away. However we would recommend that you confirm this is applicable for your policy if you think you may need to extend it, as it appears that some of their Insurance Underwriting Partners do not allow this.

For this reason, this policy is also suitable for someone looking for an Annual or Backpacker Holiday as it offers great flexibility.

For a 64 year old looking to travel for the maximum trip duration to Europe it would cost you £1112.34 (£2.02) on the Standard Policy and £1331.44 (£2.42 a day) on the Explorer.

For a 30 year old travelling to Australia and New Zealand for 365 days it would cost £295.60 on the Standard Policy and £366.28 on the Explorer Policy.

4. What are the options for Winter Sports cover?

Some Winter Sports Activities are included in the Activity Pack add on's. Most of these are in packs 3 and 4. There is no specific Winter Sports cover though as its treated as an activity, not an optional add on in regards cover for Winter Sports risks e.g kit, avalanche, piste closure, lift pass etc.

5. What is classed as a family and how many people can be quoted for?

Family means, the lead insured, spouse (or co-habiting partner) or other adult you are travelling with and your financially dependent children/grandchildren under 21 in full time education, at the issue date of the policy, travelling with you, all normally resident with you and listed as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.

** when obtaining a quote for more than one person you should put all ages separated by a comma e.g. 31,28,7,8

6. What are the policy rules on reciprocal health agreements (EHIC, Medicare)?

If you are travelling within the EU you must obtain an EHIC Card.  If travelling to Australia or NewZealand you should enrol with Medicare.

7. What is covered under Sports and Activities on the policy?

Both policies are geared towards those adventurous World Nomads and sporting and recreational activities are a big part. There is a huge list of activities and these are marked as levels 1, 2, 3 & 4. Level 1 are covered as standard, levels 2 to 4 require an additional premium and some activities exclude things like liability or personal accident cover.

Also in this section is Work, so you can fully tailor your trip to include certain types of work if you plan to go on an extended trip and want to include this.

8. What are the policy Alcohol Exclusion terms?

The policy excludes You drinking too much alcohol, or alcohol abuse where it is reasonably foreseeable that such consumption could result in an impairment of your faculties and/or judgement resulting in a claim. World Nomads do not expect you to avoid drinking alcohol on your trip,  but will not cover any claims arising because you have drunk so much alcohol,  that your judgement is seriously affected and you need to make a claim as a result.

9. Does the policy cover Scheduled Airline Failure or Financial Failure?

Yes, both the Standard and the Explorer policy cover you for Financial Failure.

This section provides cover for the insolvency of any travel arrangements booked before departure, which do not form part of an inclusive holiday or are booked or insured already.

These would include: Scheduled Airlines / Hotels / Car ferries / Villas abroad & cottages in the United Kingdom / Railway journeys including the Eurostar / Coach journeys / Car hire / Caravan Sites / Campsites / Mobile Homes / Camper rental / Safaris / Excursions / Eurotunnel / Theme parks such as Disneyland Paris.

10. Does the policy cover Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and can I get a quote online?

Neither policy covers any pre-existing medical conditions which affect you, the people travelling, your travelling companion, an immediate relative or other people upon whose health your trip depends.

You can still take out the insurance with a pre-existing condition, but you would not be covered if you claimed as a result of this condition.    We would therefore recomment that if you are considering this policy and you do have a pre-existing condition, that you call Worldnomads and talk to them about it.

11. What are the policy rules on travelling when pregnant?

You would not be covered for normal pregnancy or childbirth. The policy does however cover you should complications arise with your pregnancy due to accidental bodily injury or unexpected illness, which occurs while on your trip. Any costs costs incurred during the period between 12 weeks before and 12 weeks after the estimated date of delivery are excluded.

12. Will I be covered if I want to do Manual Work or Bar Work or other work while I am on holiday?

The policy covers non manual work and manual work (manual work requires level 2 activity cover and payment of an additional premium. Manual work is classed as general work which does not involve the use of mechanical or industrial machinery, and does not involve working at a height exceeding 2 metres above ground level.

13. What are the requirements, if I need to claim for lost, damaged or stolen baggage?

You should provide receipts in the event of a claim, if you are unable to provide a receipt, valuation report or other acceptable proof of ownership you are not covered for any item over £75.

It is therefore important to make sure that you do have appropriate proof of any item you are taking away with you to prove your claim.

14. What does the policy cover in the event of war, terrorism or cyber attack?

Policy states you are not covered for "any consequence whether direct or indirect of war, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities (whether war be declared or not), discharge, explosion or use of a weapon of mass destruction whether or not employing nuclear fission or fusion, or chemical, biological, radioactive or similar agents, by any party at any time for any reason, terrorist activity, civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, blockade, military or usurped power"

Under the Explorer Policy however there is up to £10,000 specifically allowed for Evacuation Expenses for Political Unrest and Catastrophe

15. Does the policy cover natural disaster or catastrophe before and during my holiday?

You are not covered under the Standard Policy, you are however covered under the Explorer Policy for up to £1000 for accomodation.

Under the Explorer Policy there is up to £10,000 specifically allowed for Evacuation Expenses for Political Unrest and Catastrophe

16. Do I have to be a UK resident to be covered under this policy?

You do need to be a UK resident, have a permanent home in the UK and have unrestricted right of entry back to the UK at the time the policy was purchased.

You can however purchase when already overseas, or resume your trip if its interrupted;

If cover has been taken out after you have left home to commence your trip, there is a waiting period of 72 hours before the insurance takes effect. Any illness or injury occurring during this waiting period will be considered a pre-existing medical condition and not covered under the terms of this policy. In the event of serious injury in connection with an accident, you will be covered from the date you take out cover subject to the accident being witnessed and verified by an independent third party.
