Who are Roam Insure and who underwrites their policies?

Review of Roam Insurance updated 24th February 2019 by Jonathan Upton.

Thomas Cook famous for providing quality holidays for over 175 years, launched Thomas Cook Money in November 2017. Their aim to transform the foreign currency, banking and Insurance market.

In addition to competitive foreign currency rates, Thomas Cook Money launched "Sumo" a mobile banking app, "Lyk" pre-paid mastercard and "Roam" their 21st Century take on Travel Insurance.

21 Key Points you need to know about Roam Insure's travel policy wording

1

What is the age/classification of a child on the policy?

There is no family classification or discount under the Roam policy. Each person is rated individually according to their age. However under the annual travel policy, each child is insured to travel on their own, as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

This would be useful for example if your child went on a school trip.

2

What are the policy age limits?

The Roam single trip policies are available to anyone under the age of 85.

The Roam annual multi trip policies are available to anyone under the age of 70.

If under Roam's annual travel policy, you reach the age of 70, during the period of insurance, cover would continue until renewal date. However you would not be offered renewal terms and would have to look elsewhere for travel insurance.

3

What are the policy Trip Duration limits?

Roam Insurance single trip policies allow you to insure trips of up to 12 months. Very useful if you are planning longer trips abroad.

The Roam annual policy, allows unlimited trips abroad throughout the year, provided each trip is no longer than 45 days. This is the maximum limit and there is no option to extend this.

4

What are the options for Winter Sports cover?

All three policies, allow you to choose the option to include cover for winter sports. Choosing the Wintersport option covers you to take part in over 25 different winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding, skiing off piste with a guide, sledging, snowmobiling and tobogganing. Check the policy wording for a complete list.

You are expected to wear the appropriate clothing and equipment, whilst taking part in the various activities. Also not that some past times such as snowmobiling exclude personal liability claims. For example if you knocked someone down, caused serious injury and were found to be negligent, you would not be covered by your Insurance.

The winter sports section cover your Ski Equipment, Hire of Equipment if your equipment, is accidentally lost, stolen or damaged. Your unused ski pack (ski school fees, lift pass, or equipment hire) following your bodily injury or illness.

Piste Closure, a fixed amount if the ski runs are closed due to lack or snow or unexpected avalanche. This does not apply to holidays taken outside the resorts published ski season.

Finally the policy covers the cost of additional accommodation, if you are prevented from using yours due to adverse weather conditions.

5

What is classed as a family and how many people can be quoted for?

As mentioned above, there is no specific family classification or discount. Instead both single trip and annual multi-trip policies allow you to include up to eight travellers.

6

What are the policy rules on reciprocal health agreements (EHIC, Medicare)?

If you are travelling to the European Union or the European Economic Area, or Switzerland, you are strongly advised to apply for and carry a European Health Insurance Card. This card will allow you to benefit from reciprocal medical arrangements, should the need arise.

If you are travelling to Australia, you are also advised to enrol in the local Medicare scheme. This can be carried out at the time you are seeking medical treatment. This allows you to benefit from reciprocal arrangements we have with Australia.

7

What is covered under Sports and Activities on the policy?

The Roam policy automatically includes cover for over 110 different sports and activities. A full list (shown as Grade one) is printed in the policy wording, which we recommend you read, because some of the activities, such as Yachting, sailing or quad biking, exclude personal liability cover.

For the more adventurous holidaymaker, you can choose to add higher risk activities, such as trekking or walking between 2500 and 4000 metres, mountain biking, Scuba diving down to 30 metres (all grade 2 activities), Paragliding and Scuba diving down to 50 metres (all grade 3 activities), Caving, Parasailing, or trekking up to 6000 metres (grade 4).

For the higher grade activities, you are expected to pay an additional premium. Personal Liability is excluded and Personal Accident cover is reduced by 50%.

8

What are the policy Alcohol Exclusion terms?

Many holidaymakers like to enjoy themselves and have a few drinks to help them relax and unwind. The better quality travel insurance policies, recognise this fact and have sensible alcohol wordings in their policies. Roam Insurance is no different.

They don't expect you to avoid alcohol, but will not cover claims, where you have drunk so much alcohol that your judgement is affected and you need to make a claim as a result.

9

Does the policy cover Scheduled Airline Failure or Financial Failure?

The Prime policy automatically includes cover against Financial Failure, up to £5,000.

The other two policies do not provide this cover.

10

Does the policy cover Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and can I get a quote online?

As with most Travel Insurance, Roam will not cover any medical conditions that you are aware of, whether diagnosed or not, or any existing condition that has not been declared.

However it is possible to declare medical conditions online during the quotation process. The benefit is that you are travel safe in the knowledge that you medical conditions are covered. At the end of the declaration process, the Insurer may accept your condition at normal terms, charge an extra premium or apply additional terms and conditions to the policy.

11

What are the policy rules on travelling when pregnant?

All Roam Insurance policies exclude cover for pregnancy, unless they fall within the definitions of complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

The policy provides a definition of complications, which lists the problems that would be covered. However it is important to note that the problems are only covered if they occur more than eight weeks (or sixteen weeks in the case of multiple births) before the expected delivery date.

12

Will I be covered if I want to do Manual Work or Bar Work or other work while I am on holiday?

Bar and Restaurant work, Fruit or vegetable picking (by hand). refereeing, student counsellors and student exchange visits, voluntary work in a school or orphanage (manual work only) are automatically covered under the policies.

13

What are the requirements, if I need to claim for lost, damaged or stolen baggage?

It is important that you keep all your original receipts, for any item that is worth more than £100.

Without substantiated proof of ownership, the maximum settlement of a single item is £100 and the maximum total settlement is restricted to £500.

14

What does the policy cover in the event of war, terrorism or cyber attack?

The policy automatically provides medical expenses cover in the event you are injured in a terrorist attack

15

Does the policy cover natural disaster or catastrophe before and during my holiday?

There is no cover for natural disaster or catastrophe, except under the Prime policy which does cover unused travel or accommodation costs, or having to cut short your holiday as a result of a volcanic ash cloud.

16

Do I have to be a UK resident to be covered under this policy?

Travel Insurance is only available to those customers that permanently live and have registered with a medical practitioner in the United Kingdom.

17

What are the options for Gadget Cover?

All three policies include cover for gadgets as standard. The levels of cover are, Essentials and Select policies up to £400 per insured person and the Prime policy up to £2,000 per insured person.

Gadgets include items such as Mobile Phones, l-pads, tables and Laptops plus their accessories. An important point to note is that any gadget must be less than two years old at the time you start your holiday.

18

What are the options for Cruise Cover?

All three policies include the option to add cover for a Cruise. By paying the relevant additional premium, Emergency Medical Expenses cover is extended to any Cruise that you may take.

The cover for Baggage, Cover and Gadgets is extended and increased. The increases are the same as the standard baggage cover under the Prime Policy but make a big difference to the Essential and Select Policies.

There is also cover for missed shore trips, due to the ship being unable to Dock and compensation if you have to be confined to your cabin for more than 24 hours (due to illness, injury or quarantine). If you have to cancel your holiday, you will also be entitled to claim for any lost excursions, that you had pre-paid.

19

What about the Policy Wording?

The policy is just over 50 pages long. This may seem a lot, but it is nicely set out. A good table of contents allows you to find any section quickly.

It is written in plain English, and has been awarded a crystal mark by the plain English Campaign for clarity.

I like the easy to understand flow charts, the "What to do" and "Did you know" sections. Overall a well worded and easy to understand policy wording.

20

Are they on Comparison sites such as Confused.com or CompareTheMarket.com?

Thomas Cook do offer travel insurance via the Confused comparison site. The three levels of cover are Value, Value Plus and Value Extra. Overall the levels of cover are much lower and the excess higher. We recommend you visit Roaminsure.co.uk direct to take advantage of better travel insurance.

21

Overall Summary

This is a great set of policies. There is something for all budgets, but if you can afford it, you should seriously look at the Prime policy. As well as the high levels of cover, it comes with lots of extras as standard, such as Car rental excess cover, loss of hotel facilities, connecting flight cover, volcanic ash cover, as well as business cover, all included in the price.

We have awarded the Prime policy our coveted Five Star rating and it features in our top ten best five star policies.

The quotation system is clearly set up for mobile, in fact my only real criticism (and a minor one at that) is that even using it on a desktop computer, the quotation still stays the same size as it would for a mobile, which can be a little annoying, when you are trying to compare cover.
