Key Points you need to know about Insure and Escape's policy wording

1. What is the age/classification of a child on the policy?

The Insure and Escape's definition of a child is anyone under the age of 18 and in full time education.

2. What are the policy age limits?

Both the single and annual trip policies have an age limit of 75.

3. What are the policy Trip Duration limits?

A single trip policy can be taken out for up to 365 days.

The annual travel policy by contrast allows for unlimited trips throughout the year, but each trip is restricted to 32 days if you choose the economy policy, 45 days for the Premium policy and 62 days for the First policy.

4. What is classed as a family and how many people can be quoted for?

Insure and Escape policies can be taken out by up to 11 individuals, couples or families that consist of one or two adults and up to 9 children.

Children who are insured under annual multi trip policies are insured to travel separately, provided that they are travelling under the supervision of an appropriate adult.

5. What are the options for Winter Sports cover?

Winter sports may be included under single trips (for the duration of the trip) or annual policies, up to a maximum of 17 days.

The Insure and Escape policy actually covers you for over 30 different winter sport activities, including off-piste skiing and snowboarding (with a guide). There are a few higher risk activities such as mountain boarding or heli-skiing, which can covered, provided you pay the additional premium for sports activity packs 3 and 4.

6. What are the options for Cruise Cover?

Cruise cover is an option for all policies. The paid cruise option provides compensation if a port is missed due to weather or a change in itinerary, cabin confinement due to illness or injury and missed excursions for the same reason.

It also covers lost or damaged formal cruise attire. It is important to note however that unlike many cruise cover extensions there is no cover to assist with additional travel expenses, if you miss the departure of your cruise.

7. What are the options for Gadget Cover?

The Insure and Escape policy covers gadgets up to £500 Economy and up to £750 Premium and First Policies.

You also have the option to extend this cover (subject to payment of an additional premium) to £1,000 Economy cover, £2,000 Premium cover and £3,000 First Cover.

The original gadget must have been purchased in the UK and you must be able to provide proof of purchase.

8. What is covered under Sports and Activities on the policy?

The Insure & Escape policy covers 50 or so sports activities for free. These are listed in activity pack 1. Activity pack 2 covers the winter sports options. Whilst activity pack 1 covers the very basics, if you wanted to go snorkeling, tubing, or visit a theme park for example, you would need to pay the additional premium for activity pack 3.

Insurers have different attitudes to risk and therefore it's important that you check the list carefully to make sure you are correctly covered.

9. Will I be covered if I want to do Manual Work or Bar Work or other work while I am on holiday?

The Insure and Escape policy excludes manual work defined as work that involves the lifting or carrying of heavy items in excess of 25kg, work at a higher level than two storeys, or any form of work underground.

Bar work is an occupation covered under the sports and activity pack 3, but will require payment of an additional premium.

10. What are the policy rules on reciprocal health agreements (EHIC, Medicare)?

The carrying and use of a European Health Insurance Card, is strongly recommended, so that you are able to take advantage of any reciprocal agreements when visiting a European Country.

If you are planning to visit Australia, you must enrol with the local Medicare Office on arrival.

11. Does the policy cover Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and can I get a quote online?

If in the last two years you been prescribed medication or receive treatment or surgery, attended a hospital clinic or GP surgery/specialist as an out patient or in-patient, are awaiting any medical treatment or investigation, or you have been diagnosed by a medical practitioner as suffering from a terminal illness, you must declare the condition to Insurers.

This can be carried out at the same as you obtain an online quotation, without the need to spend ages on the phone.

Please note however that if you have a close relative, business associate or friends who are not travelling with you or not insured with Insure and Escape, who have an existing medical condition, Insure and Escape will not provide cover for any claim arising as a result of an existing medical condition of a non travelling close relative, the person you are intending to stay with, or a business associate or friend.

12. What are the policy rules on travelling when pregnant?

The Insure and Escape policy includes cover for emergency medical expenses relating to pregnancy or childbirth from week 0 to week 28, whilst you are away.

From the commencement of week 29 - week 40, there is no cover provided in respect of claims relating to a normal pregnancy or childbirth, unless there is an unexpected complication. A list of which can be found in the Insure and Escape policy.

13. What are the policy Alcohol Exclusion terms?

The Insure and Escape policy excludes claims related to alcohol, where you blood alcohol level exceeds 0.19% which is approximately four pints or four 175ml glasses of wine.

14. Does the policy cover Scheduled Airline Failure or Financial Failure?

All three policies provide cover against scheduled airline failure as standard. First Cover also insures you against end supplier failure as well.

15. Does the policy cover natural disaster or catastrophe before and during my holiday?

Not covered under any policy and no option to include it.

16. What are the requirements, if I need to claim for lost, damaged or stolen baggage?

The Insure and Escape policy requires receipts for any item over the value of £50. If you are unable to provide proof, any settlement will be restricted to £50, subject to a maximum overall limit of £150.

17. What does the policy cover in the event of war, terrorism or cyber attack?

All claims relating to Terrorism are excluded with the exception of emergency medical expenses.

18. Do I have to be a UK resident to be covered under this policy?

You must have your main home in the UK, Channel Islands or BFPO and not have spent more than six months abroad the year before you purchase a policy.

19. What about the Policy Wording?

The policy is 34/35 pages long. Frustratingly if you want to compare the cover, you have to read three policies as there is a separate policy for each level of cover.

The layout itself is the standard one used on the majority of Travel Insurance Facility policies. Whilst all the information you need is there, it is not the best laid out, it is not particularly customer friendly, nor the easiest to read.

20. Are they on Comparison sites such as Confused.com or CompareTheMarket.com?

Insure and Escape appear on the Moneysupermarket Comparison website. The three policies are called Essential Plus, Deluxe Plus and Finest Plus.

We can confirm that the cover is less and the excess higher in respect of the Moneysupermarket policies, when comparing to those you can purchase direct from Insure and Escape.

21. Overall Summary

The First Cover policy has been awarded our four star rating and covers all core and secondary areas of insurance, albeit with slightly lower overall limits than some of the five star policies, however I am sure the premiums reflect this.

Insure and Escape provide plenty of choice, from three different levels of cover, to Cruise, Winter Sport, Wedding and Golf cover, as well as a choice of different sporting activities, split into different categories.
