Computer Quote Cat Insurance Review
  • Policies must provide cover for all core sections and all secondary sections.
  • Vets Fees - Policies must provide a minimum maximum benefit of £6,000, or £4,000 per condition and cover either;
  1. A maximum benefit per condition no renewal guarantee.
  2. A maximum limit per condition with a lifetime renewal guarantee; or
  3. A maximum benefit per year with a lifetime renewal guarantee.
  • Cruciate Ligaments - Damage to, or disease of the cruciate ligament is a common problem in animals. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £4,000.
  • MRI/CT Scans - If your pet suffers from seizures, paralysis or back problems, your vet may recommend an MRI scan. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £2,000.
  • Euthanasia - If your pet needs to be put to sleep to alleviate further suffering, policies must cover this. A policy must offer at least £100 to cover the cost of euthanasia.
  • Complementary treatments ? The industry average for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy is £1,000. Five star policies have at least this amount of cover.
  • Prescribed Food - All five star policies must cover the cost of prescription food (to treat bladder stones) up to at least £100
  • Dental treatment - Dental treatment for accidents of at least £500.
  • Loss of your Pet - The industry average benefit for loss of your pet due to accident, illness, theft or straying is £1,000. All policies must offer at least this amount.
  • Compulsory excesses - The industry average for the age at which additional compulsory excesses are charged is 6. All five star policies will not charge an additional compulsory excess until at least this age.
  • Five-star policies may provide additional service and cover benefits over and above standard policies.

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Pet Insurance?

Any Pet must be owned by you and living at your home address in the United Kingdom.

You must live permanently in the United Kingdom for at least 9 months of the year.

Your pet must be over the age of 8 weeks.

 

2. What type of policies do they offer?

Computer quote offer four different pet insurance policies. They are

Value Accident Policy - Covers vet fees in respect of accidents only up to £2,000 per condition per year.

Standard Policy - Covers vet fees up to £3,000 per condition for a maximum of 12 months (known as a time limited policy).

Classic Policy - Covers vet fees up to £3,000 per condition per year.

Ultimate Policy - Covers vet fees up to £5,000 per condition per year.

Provided the policies are renewed the benefits under the classic and ultimate policy are reinstated. These are known as lifetime policies.

 
 
 
 

3. What's not covered?

This is a list of important exclusions. Computer Quote Pet policies do not cover;

  1. Costs for cosmetic elective, routine or preventative treatments.
  2. Vaccinations, spaying, castration, or retained testes.
  3. Grooming, nail clipping, whelping, kittening, bathing and dematting.
  4. The Killing and controlling of fleas and worms.
  5. Costs for any Treatment relating to or resulting from breeding and any complications that may occur as a result.
  6. The costs of treatment for behavioural problems.
  7. The cost of any pheromone products or any general health enhancers.
  8. Any unlicensed treatment or medication, or any complications arising from this.
  9. Routine or investigative laboratory tests or procedures.
  10. The cost of hiring or buying a cage, basket or bedding.
  11. Costs as a result of your failure to carry out recommendations to adjust your pets weight.
  12. House or out of hours calls unless a yet confirms that Your Pet was suffering from a life-endangering condition.
  13. Any costs associated with organ transplants or any experimental surgical procedures, prosthetics (artificial body parts) with the exception of costs related to replacement hip, elbow and/or knee joints.
  14. Any claim arising as a result of any sexually transmitted disease, rabies, Aujesky's disease, leishmaniasis, epidemic outbreaks or any 'notifiable' disease as listed by DEFRA. Any disease transmitted from animals or birds to humans.
  15. Any dogs used for trade, profession or business, other than show dogs.
  16. Any dogs used as gun dogs, or for guarding, racing, coursing or beating, shooting or hunting of any kind.
  17. Any Pets used for breeding (any more than one accidental pregnancy would be classed as breeding).
  18. The follow breeds or crossbreeds Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa/Tosa Inus, Dogo Argentino (also referred to as Argentine Dogo and Argentinian Mastiff), Fila Brasileiro, American Bandogge/Bandogge Mastiff, American/Irish Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Australian Dingo, Boerboel, Bully Kutta, Canary Dogs/Perro De Pressa Canarios/Presa Canarios, Cane Corsos, Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs/Sarlooswolfhounds/Wolf Hybrids, Korean Jindo, Northern Inuit Dogs, Racing Greyhounds, Shar Pei, Tamaskan, Utonaga.
 
 

4. What are the policy conditions?

If your dog is on a public highway, it must be under control, wear a collar and be on a lead.

You must notify Computerquote of any change in circumstances that may affect your pet insurance.

You must take care of your pet and promptly arrange for any treatment to prevent or reduce the risk of illness or injury.

Your pet must be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus for dogs, kennel cough (if using a boarding kennel) for Cats, enterisis, feline leukemia and cat flu. All vaccinations should be kept up to date.

 

5. Are complementary treatments covered?

Complementary treatments are covered up to £300 for the accident, standard and classic policies and up to £500 for the ultimate policy. These amounts are below the industry average.

Complementary treatments are defined as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic, homeopathic or herbal medicines, or laser Treatment administered by a suitably qualified practitioner following a recommendation from a qualified Vet.

The policy does not cover unapproved complementary medicine such as pulsed magnetic field therapy, matrix energy field therapy, the Bowen Technique, reiki massage and faith healing.

 
 
 
 

6. Does the policy cover Prescription food and Dentistry?

All Computer quote pet policies cover prescription food up to a maximum of £100. This cover is only provided for food prescribed by a vet and purchased at a veterinary surgery or online pharmacy, that is used solely for the purpose of dissolving bladder stones or crystals in the urine.

Computer quote deduct 53p a tin and £1 per kilo of dry food as your normal feeding costs. The cover is for a maximum of 60 days.

All polices cover the cost of dental treatment but only as a result of an accident or injury. There is no cover for illness related dentistry.

 
 

7. Are MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims covered?

The Computer quotes pet insurance policies cover the following;

Value Accident  MRI/CT Scans up to £500, Cruciate Ligament claims up to £500

Standard and Classic policies MRI/CT Scans up to £750, Cruciate Ligament claims up to £3,000.

Ultimate policy MRI/CT Scans up to £1,250, Cruciate Ligament claims up to £5,000.

 
 

8. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

All policies cover the cost of putting your pet to sleep, providing it is only to alleviate incurable and inhumane suffering as recommended by your vet.

Costs in relation to cremation or burial of your pet are not covered.

 
 

9. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

You are able to insure more than one pet cats or dogs under the same policy. There is no discount for insuring more than one pet.

 
 

10. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

You are unable to cover any of your pets pre-existing medical conditions. A pre-existing condition is classed as any illness or conditions, diagnosed or undiagnosed, showing signs or symptons before the inception of the policy or the 14 day waiting period.

 
 

11. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

The policy excludes any treatment or death cover as a result of breeding, pregnancy or giving birth.

The policy will cover the treatment of false pregnancy provided your pet has been treated for less than two occurrences.

 

12. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

Cover is extended to cover your pet whilst abroad subject to the terms and conditions of the PETS Scheme.

Vets fees cover is extended whilst you are abroad for a maximum of 30 days and no more than two holidays.

The policy does not cover additional quarantine costs, emergency repatriation, or loss of your pet passport.

 

13. How long does the policy run for?

All Computer Quote pet policies run for 12 consecutive months.

 
 

14. How do I renew my policy?

Computer Quote or their representatives will write to you 14 days before the renewal date of your policy. They will inform you of any changes to the premium, and or terms and conditions.

If you pay by monthly direct debit, your policy will automatically continue and your bank account to be debited.

If you paid by debit or credit card, you need to contact Computer Quote to renew the policy, unless you agreed that the annual payment could be automatically be debited from your account.

If you do not wish to renew the policy, you should contact the company before the renewal date and also cancel any direct debit..

 
 

15. How do I cancel my policy?

You have 14 days from the start of the policy to cancel. Provided you have not made any claims, you will be entitled to a full refund of any premiums paid.

If you wish to cancel the policy at any other time, provided you have not made a claim, you will be entitled to a pro rata refund of premium, less an administration charge.

If you cancel and have made a claim, there is no refund of premium.

If you cancel because your pet has died or has been lost or stolen, there will be no administration fee charged and you will not be charged for the remainder of the year.

 
 

16. How easy is the process of making a claim and how quickly are claims paid?

A pet insurance claim form can be downloaded from the site. It must be completed by you and your vet, together with relevant supporting documentation. You must return the documents to Computer Quote by post. Once the claim form has been received you are able to track it's process through the website.

Alternatively you can phone the claims helpline and ask them to send you a claim form.

Every claim is reviewed by an expert team of Internal Pet Claims Assessors and the cost compared against a database of similar cases.

 
 

17. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

You are not covered for the first 24 hours in respect of accidents and the first 14 days in respect of any illness.

 
 
 

18. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

The standard policy excess (the first amount of any claim you must pay) is only £55.

The standard policy excess in respect of dog liability claims is £250.

 
 

19. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

When your pet reaches the age of 8 and over, in addition to the standard excess, you will be required to pay 15% of any claim.

For example if your claim is for £1,000, your contribution will be £55 plus 15% of the balance £141.75 total £196.75.

It was easy to find the pet section and there is plenty of information to digest. The site provides detailed explanation of the types of policies available and how they compare. You have the option of downloading the terms of business and the policy wording before the quotation stage.

There is no live chat, but you are able to either email or phone up with any queries.

The quotation system is simple to use and once again a full breakdown of cover and terms and conditions, policy wording etc. is provided.

 

21. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The policy wording is 20 pages of small black text. There is no colour coding and it was difficult to follow.

There was no summary of cover or highlighted reference to contact or claims helplines.

The policy text had a reading score of 31.4 (out of 100), classed as difficult to read.

The text had an average reading age of 21 - 22 years. This means that a person with a reading age of 21-22 years should be able to understand the policy.
