Churchill a familiar company whose brand includes a well known bulldog called "Churchill"

Churchill were one of the first motor insurers to offer their policies direct to the public. As well as motor they offer a wide range of Insurance Policies, including Pet Insurance.

In 2003 they were purchased by the Royal Bank of Scotland, who also own Direct Line.

Churchill Pet Insurance is underwritten by UK Insurance Limited who are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

  • Vets Fees - Policies must provide a minimum maximum benefit of £6,000, or £4,000 per condition and cover either;

  • Cruciate Ligaments - Damage to, or disease of the cruciate ligament is a common problem in animals. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £4,000.
  • MRI/CT Scans - If your pet suffers from seizures, paralysis or back problems, your vet may recommend an MRI scan. Most policies include cover for this within their overall vet fees limit. In line with industry averages, a policy must offer cover of at least £2,000.
  • Euthanasia - If your pet needs to be put to sleep to alleviate further suffering, policies must cover this. A policy must offer at least £100 to cover the cost of euthanasia.
  • Complementary treatments ? The industry average for complementary treatments such as physiotherapy is £1,000. Five star policies have at least this amount of cover.
  • Prescribed Food - All five star policies must cover the cost of prescription food (to treat bladder stones) up to at least £100
  • Dental treatment - Dental treatment for accidents of at least £500.
  • Loss of your Pet - The industry average benefit for loss of your pet due to accident, illness, theft or straying is £1,000. All policies must offer at least this amount.
  • Compulsory excesses - The industry average for the age at which additional compulsory excesses are charged is 6. All five star policies will not charge an additional compulsory excess until at least this age.
  • Five-star policies may provide additional service and cover benefits over and above standard policies.
  • Premiums are competitive in relation to the cover provided.

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Pet Insurance?

You must be a resident of the United Kingdom, owner and keeper of your pet who must live with you.

Your pet must be older then 8 weeks and in good health at the start of the insurance.

 

 
 

2. What type of policies do they offer?

Churchill only offer one policy, which covers vets fees up to £3,000 per condition, but only for a maximum of 12 months. This type of policy is known as a "time limited" policy.

 

3. What's not covered?

A list of the most important exclusions, Churchill does not cover the following:

  1. Routine examinations, tests, bathing, dematting, vaccinations
  2. Your pet being used for commercial, guard, breeding, as a gun dog, security racing, or working purposes.
  3. Claims caused by your pet worrying livestock.
  4. Claims as a result of an illness that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
  5. The cost of preventative or non-essential treatment, tests or diagnostic procedures.
  6. The cost of flea treatments, wormers, nail clipping, spaying, castration, retained testicles.
  7. Any treatment relating to pregnancy or giving birth and or any associated complications.
  8. The cost of medication, supplements or pheromones to change/modify your pet's behaviour.
  9. The treatment for behavioural problems or any condition arising out of behavioural problems.
  10. The cost of house or out of hours calls, unless the vet can confirm it was absolutely essential.
  11. Cages, Baskets or bedding.
  12. Claims for death from illness, for pets aged 11 years and older.

The following are a list of maximum benefits included under the vets fees amount

  1. Up to a maximum of £45 towards consultation fees for each separate visit.
  2. Up to a maximum of £70 towards histology and cytology fees.
  3. Up to a maximum of £110 towards out of hours fees for each separate visit.
 
 
 
 

4. What are the policy conditions?

Your dog must not fall under the restrictions of the dangerous dogs act.

You must pay to have any treatment recommended by a vet to prevent illness or injury.

You must pay to have a dental health check every year and carry out any work recommended by a vet within three months.

 
 

5. Are complementary treatments covered?

The Church Pet Policy covers up to £1,000 for complementary treatment (this amount falls within the overall vet fees limit)

Complementary treatment is described as manipulative therapy carried out by a suitably qualified person that has been
specifically recommended by a vet, or other alternative therapy given directly by a vet who is properly trained to do so.

Complementary treatment includes hydrotherapy and physiotherapy up to a maximum of 15 sessions at £35 per session.

 

6. Does the policy cover Prescription food and Dentistry?

Churchill pet insurance does not cover prescription food in any format.

Dental work is covered as long as the treatment relates to accidental external injury, or an illness that has been proved as the direct cause of a tooth or gum problem.

The removal of first teeth are covered provided your pet is younger than six months old and was insured with Churchill before it was sixteen weeks old.

The policy does not cover any condition arising out of tooth or gum disease, or the cost of any treatment for scale and polishing, root canal or crowns

 

 
 

7. Are MRI/CT scans and Cruciate Ligament claims covered?

Churchill covers both MRI/CT Scans and cruciate ligament claims up to the vet fees limit of £3,000.

 
 

8. Does the policy cover the cost of euthanasia?

The policy does not cover the cost or euthanasia or assistance with the costs of cremation or burial.

 
 

9. Can I cover more than one pet on the same policy?

Churchill will allow you to insure up to three pets under one policy (dogs or cats). They offer a 10% discount for insuring more than one pet.

 
 
 

10. Will the policy cover my pets pre-existing medical conditions?

Churchill do not cover your pet's pre-existing conditions.

Pre-existing conditions are classed as those that show symptons or signs of injury or illness before your pet was covered by insurance.

 
 
 

11. Will the policy cover my pet during pregnancy?

Churchill Pet Insurance do not cover any treatment for pregnancy or giving birth, or any complications as a result.

 
 

12. Am I covered to take my pet abroad?

The PETS scheme allows your to take your pet to qualifying European Union countries  and return home with out putting your pet into quarantine.

If you select the option, Churchill will cover your pet whilst abroad for a maximum of three journeys up to 30 days each.

In addition to the extension of vets fees, the policy covers the cost of euthanasia and cremation, if a vet recommends putting your pet to sleep whilst you are travelling.

Additional Quarantine costs up to £1,500, Emergency repatriation up to £300 and £200 in case you lose your pets passport.

Note that when travelling abroad with your pet, it is a requirement of the policy that they wear a collar that shows details that
will allow you to be reunited with them.

 

13. How long does the policy run for?

Churchill pet Insurance is an annually renewal policy. Terms and conditions are set out at the start and remains the same for a minimum of 12 months.

 
 

14. How do I renew my policy?

21 days before the anniversary of your policy, Churchill will write to you to tell you about any changes to the terms and conditions or premium. Your insurance will automatically continue each the monthly premium continue to be debited unless you advise Churchill otherwise.

 
 

15. How do I cancel my policy?

If you cancel Churchill Pet Insurance within 14 days of the inception of the policy and have not made a claim, Churchill will refund any premium paid in full.

If you cancel your policy outside the 14 days cooling off period, you will receive no refund.

 
 

16. How easy is the process of making a claim and how quickly are claims paid?

You are unable to download a claim form from the website and must phone the Churchill claim line, available monday - friday, 9am - 5pm, so that they can send you one.

Churchill must receive a fully completed claim form before settling a claim.

You should contact them prior to any costs arising. Churchill are able to settle claims direct with your vet.

 
 

17. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

Accidents and Liability claims are covered from inception of the policy.

There is no cover for illness claims that occur within the first 10 days of the inception of the policy.

Claims for lost pets can be made, after your pet has been missing and not found for at least 45 days.

 

18. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

Churchill require you to pay the first £65 of any claim for either a dog or cat.

You are required to pay the first £100 for any dog liability claims.

 
 

19. Am I required to make additional monetary contributions to any claim?

Once your pet reaches the age of 7, in addition to the fixed excess, you will be required to contribute a further 20% of any claim made.

For example if your claim is for £1,000, you would be require to contribute £65 excess plus 20% of the balance £187.00 total £252.00.

 
 

20. Website Navigation and online shopping experience

The Churchill website deals with ll different insurance products, but it's easy to find your way to the pet section. The website is nicely laid out, having undergone a recent facelift.

Churchill display all the information you are likely to want to read before getting a quotation. This includes a summary of cover, access to policy wording, the assumptions they make and the important policy exclusions. The fact that Churchill only offer one policy makes this process a lot easier.

There is no live chat, but you can phone them. A virtual assistant responds to frequently asked questions, although it was unable to answer four separate questions and suggested I phone up with my query.

Getting a quote is simple. Cover is presented in an easy to read format and you have the option to include, liability, death and or overseas travel cover. Useful if you just want a quote for the basics. 

 
 

21. Is the policy wording easy to understand?

The Churchill pet insurance policy is 28 pages long. It does not contain a summary of cover, although not strictly necessary as there is only one policy to compare.

An index assists with navigation and important/key contact numbers are at the end of the policy.

The policy deals with General conditions and exclusions at the start of the policy, before explaining each section of cover.

Exclusions are printed in blue.

The policy text had a reading score of 51.8 (out of 100), classed as fairly difficult to read.

The text had an average reading age of 17 - 18 years. This means that a person with a reading age of 17-18 years should be able to understand the policy.

Churchill offer just one policy, that covers vets fees up to £3,000 for a maximum of 12 months. So if you want a policy that covers potential vet costs for a longer period, this isn't the policy for you. We have awarded the Churchill policy 3 stars.

The policy wording is classed as fairly difficult to read and may be a reason why there have been misunderstandings. It's important that you read the policy wording carefully, to ensure you understand what is and isn't covered.

According to our research the Churchill pet insurance is more competitive for older pets between the ages of 6 and 10 years and 11 months (which is the maximum age they will up to for new business).
