Key Points you need to know about BIB Underwriters Ltd's policy wording

1. What are the eligibility criteria for Horse Insurance?

Your horse must be in sound health and free from any injury, illness, disease or disability or physical abnormality whatsoever.

You must provide proper care and attention to your horse at all times and do all things possible to avoid or minimise any loss covered under insurance.
You must be the sole owner of the horse, or have a financial interest in the horse, living in the UK Includes England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands including transport between these countries.
Your horse must be between the ages of 21 days to 17 years (Veteran policy for horses age 18 and over).

2. What do horse insurance vet fees cover?

The BIBU equi-sure policy has a number of vet fees options, that cover your horse for veterinary surgeon fees and medication in the event of accident, illness or disease.

Cover 1: £3,000 per period of insurance each and every claim limited to a maximum of 12 months.
Cover 2: £5,000 per period of insurance each and every claim limited to a maximum of 12 months.
Cover 3: £5,000 per incident, with a maximum overall benefit of £12,500 per period of insurance, limited to a maximum of 12 months.

Optional Colic Extension which covers your horse for additional veterinary surgeon fees and medication in the event of colic surgery only. Extension covers a further £2,500 subject to an additional premium.

The Equi-Sure Essential policy covers vet fees up to £1,250 per incident in respect of treatment to accidental injuries only.

The Equi-Sure Veteran policy covers horses aged 18 or over with values from £500 to £2,000 only (higher values on referral)
Veterinary Surgeon Fees up to £2,000 per incident for accidental injury caused only by
• Bone Fractures
• Visible External Wounds.

3. What's not covered?

Insurance issues can arise when a customer finds out that a particular claim is not covered. In many cases this is because the customer just wasn't aware of or didn't understand a particular exclusion.

It is absolutely essential that you read the policy wording carefully to make sure you are fully understand the policy you are buying. BIB Underwriters do not cover;

  1. Veterinary Surgeon fees as a result of undergoing a surgical operation or general anaesthetic, unless conducted by a vet in an immediate attempt to prevent a claim, or such treatment has been notified and agreed.
  2. Veterinary Surgeon fees for MRI scans and other exploratory work without prior permission unless it is in an immediate attempt to prevent a claim.
  3. Claims relating to routine preventative treatments, including inoculations, castration, dentistry including the removal of wolf teeth, farriery.
  4. Any treatment normally associated with the maintenance of a healthy horse.
  5. Melanomas, cancerous tumours or growths in horses aged 13 and over.
  6. Malicious or wilful injury to the horse caused by you,your family or anyone handling the horse with your consent.
  7. Any livery or transportation costs.
  8. If your horse is insured for under £2,500 any amount payable for vet fees will reflect the sum insured.
  9. Claims caused by barbed or razor wire.

4. What activities can I insure my horse for?

BIBU split activities into four group;

A Horses at Grass, Youngstock, Broodmares (excluding broodmares within the racing industry).
B All activities in list A plus, Heavy Horses, Stallions at Stud, Hacking, Showing, Gymkhana, Driving (excluding cross country or trials), Dressage up to and including Elementary, Pony Club activities, Jumping up to 90cms in the following: Pony Club, Riding Club, Hunter Trials, Unaffiliated Showjumping.
C All activities list in A and B plus, Dressage (Medium to Advance), Long Distance Riding up to 25 miles, Showjumping under BS Rules, Unaffiliated and affiliated BE Eventing up to Intermediate, jumping over 1 metre in pony club, riding club, hunter trials.
D All activities listed in A, B and C plus, Dressage (Prix St George to Grand Prix), Team Chasing, Polo, Advanced BE Eventing.

The Equi-sure Essential and Veteran policies restrict use to groups A or B.

5. What are the Insurers vetting requirements?

Vetting requirements are not mentioned so you would need to contact the company direct.

6. Who is covered to ride my horse?

Any responsible person with your permission.

7. Does the policy cover complementary treatments?

None of the BIBU horse insurance policies cover alternative treatments.

8. Will the policy cover me if my horse dies?

In the event your horse dies or is put to sleep as the result of an accidental injury, illness or disease, BIBU will pay the fair market value or sum insured whichever is the lower. The cover applies if your horse subsequently dies up to 12 months after the incident.

If you horse needs to be euthanised this must be carried out with the consent of BIBU, unless it is an emergency and carried out by a veterinary surgeon in accordance with BEVA guidelines.

Horses with a sum insured exceeding £10,000, will require a post-mortem, the cost of which must be met by you.

9. Does the policy cover the cost of disposal?

BIBU will pay up to £200 towards the cost of disposal of your horses body. It does not cover the cost of euthanasia.

10. Will the policy cover me if my horse is lost or stolen?

If your horse is stolen or mysteriously disappears or dies as a result of the theft or attempted theft, BIBU will pay out the market value or sum insured whichever is the lower amount.

They will also pay up to £200 to cover advertising and any reward which leads to the recovery of your horse.

The horse must be missing for at least 90 days.

11. Does the policy cover me against Personal Accidents?

The policy offers the option to cover yourself in the event of death or bodily injury sustained during the period of insurance
by you or any responsible person using your horse with your permission.

The policy also covers the cost of dental treatment incurred as a direct result of the incident.

The policy covers death and permanent disablement up to £20,000 and dental costs up to £1,000.

The above benefits will be reduced by 50% in respect of any person who has not attained their 16th birthday
at the time of the accident.

The policy excludes;

Death or disablement where the person involved in an accident is under the age of 5, or over the age of 75 years.

Death or disablement resulting or contributing from the following:
i.) The influence of alcohol
ii.) the influence of drugs unless it is taken under the instruction and guidance of a medical professional.

12. Does the policy cover saddlery and tack?

The BIBU policy offers you the option to include cover for accidental loss, damage and theft by means of
violent entry to or exit from a securely locked* building, of your saddlery and horse tack.

Saddlery & Tack Option 1 – up to £700 per horse with a maximum limit of £350 for each unspecified item.
Saddlery & Tack Option 2 – up to £1000 per horse with a maximum limit of £350 for each unspecified item.
Saddlery & Tack Option 3 - Up to £2500 per horse with a maximum limit of £350 for each unspecified item.

Equi-Sure Essential -  up to £350 maximum.

*Locks must consist of five lever mortice deadlock, a deadlocking rim latch or a key operated cylinder deadlock and all accessible
windows are to be secured with key operated window locks.

13. Can my horse be covered against loss of use?

The equi-sure policy gives you the option to cover up to 75% of the horse’s fair market value or sum insured (whichever is less), in the event of any accidental injury, illness or disease which renders your horse permanently unable to fulfil the activities in which it is kept and insured.

Up to 60% of the horse’s fair market value or sum insured (whichever is less) in the event of any accidental injury, illness disease which renders the horse unable to fulfill the activities in which it is kept and insured, but it can still be ridden.

This section excludes any horse under 3 years old and any horse aged 15 or over.

Any loss as a result of degenerative conditions or diseases for horses aged 13 years or over.

This cover is not available under the Veteran or Essential policies.

Recovery Period – Upon diagnosis by a veterinary surgeon that your horse is permanently incapacitated, you must allow the horse a minimum of 10 months from the date of the diagnosis to attempt to recover from such injury, illness or disease.

14. Can I cover more than one horse under the same policy?

You can insure up to 4 horses under the same policy.

15. Will the policy cover my horse's pre-existing medical conditions?

All policies exclude any claim in connection with an injury, illness or disease sustained or contracted prior to the inception of the policy. This is called a pre-existing medical condition.

16. Will the policy cover my mare if she becomes pregnant?

BIBU exclude claims relating to the horse being in foal unless an attending vet confirms that appropriate action is to be
taken in an attempt to save the horse’s life.

17. Is there a waiting period before I am covered?

The policy excludes an death claim due to illness within the first 14 days of the policy

The policy also excludes an vet fees claim due to illness or disease within the first 30 days of the policy.

18. How much of any claim do I have to pay?

BIBU charge an excess for each and every claim as follows;

Vet fees £150, £195, or £195 plus 15% of the amount, depending on the option you have chosen.

Saddlery and Tack Equi-Sure policy £150, Essential policy £75

Third Party Liability Insurance £250.

19. How easy is the website to use?
