Although we have now officially left the European Union and agreed on a new UK Global Health Insurance card for travel to Europe, this is definitely not a replacement for travel insurance. It has never been more important, to choose the right policy because, as the current Coronavirus Pandemic has highlighted, the wrong choice can have disastrous financial and health consequences, if you have to claim whilst abroad.

At time of purchase:-
Single Trip Policies: 79 years or under.
Annual Multi-Trip policies: 79 years or under.
Winter Sports: available if you are aged 65 or under.
Single Trip, Trip Duration is up to 365 days if you are aged 64 or under, beginning and ending in your home area. Barrhead will only cover you for up to 31 days for each trip if you are aged 65 or over.
Annual Trip, Trip Duration allows you to travel as many times as you like during any one period of insurance, as long as no single trip lasts longer than 31 days. If you are aged 65 or under you can increase this to 62 days with the payment of an additional premium.
The Winter sports option (Activity Pack 3) allows you to take part in 26 different activities as standard, such as off piste skiing or snowboarding with a guide, snow parascending and Nordic cross country skiing.
If you wish to have a go at more extreme winter sports, these can also be catered for in activity packs 4 - 8, pursuits like ski mountaineering up to 6,000 metres (acitivty pack 8), Snow Kiting (Activity Pack 5) and off-piste skiing and snowboarding without a guide (Activity pack 6).
A Barrhead policy can be taken out by a single person, couples (who are living together), Families consisting of one or two adults and up to four dependent children.
Policies can also be taken out by groups of up to 12 persons, who are travelling together to the same destination, although there is not premium benefit.
The European Health Insurance Card is strongly recommended by Barrhead Travel, when visiting European countries including Switzerland. The EHIC allows you to take advantage of reciprocal health agreements with those countries.
The policy states that if the card is used when receiving medical treatment and the costs are reduced as a result, any excess will be waived.
If you are travelling to Australia, you must register with a medicare centre on arrival.
The policy covers over 100 different activities as standard, listed in activity pack one. A further 270 different pursuits are split into acitvity packs two - eight according to their risk. For example you can opt to go sand Yachting covered in activity pack 2 or Alligator wrestling and Ice diving cvoer in activity pack 8.
The more extreme the sport/activity, the higher the activity pack required and the higher the additional premium.
All policies exclude claims that relate to the consumption of alcohol, however the policy does specify an acceptable limit which is a blood alcohol level lower than 0.19%, the equivalent to four pints or four 175ml glasses of wine.
Not Covered
All Pre existing medical conditions are excluded under the policy, however you do have the option to phone their Medical Declaration line and obtain cover for any conditions. An increased premium or excess may be required and you have fourteen days to pay any additional premium.
You should be aware that they are unable to provide cover for any claim arising from a pre existing medical condition, from any person insured on the policy, a non travelling close relative, a person you are intending to stay with, or a business associate or friend, that has not been declared to the Insurer prior to travelling.

Policies include emergency medical expenses in respect of pregnancy weeks zero to 28 whilst you are away. From Week 29 - week 40, there is no cover for normal pregnancy, unless there is a complication which is listed in the policy wording.
The policy excludes manual labour which is defined as any work involving the lifting or carrying of items in excess of 25kg, any work at a level higher than two storeys or any form of underground work.
The policy states that any item with a value of more than £50, must be supported by original proof of ownership or purchase.
Any item that is not supported by acceotable proof will be settled at a maximum of £50 and subject to a limit of £150 for all items.
War and Terrorism are excluded under all policies, with the exception of claims for emergency medical expenses.
The Premier Plus policy provides a small amount of cover as standard, however a more comprehensive cover against natural disaster and catastrophe can be purchased as an option.
Policies are only available to those resident in the United Kingdom and Channel Islands
