Travel Insurance Cover Explained

What is Car Hire Excess? Abandonment? Car and Home Excess? Scheduled Airline Failure? What does it mean and do you need it? All too often policies are listed with many benefits that seem important, but are they important to you? Or should you be searching for a policy that gives you exactly the cover you really need?

To help you make the right choice for insurance, we’ve created a pictoral guide for every type of cover available with Travel Insurance. Every Policy That’s Insurance have reviewed and can be searched, has a Full Details section that explains in detail, what is and is not covered, or offered as an option on the policy. For ease of reference, we have created a range of icons as a visual guide and at the bottom of the Compare Policies page, you will see a full list, with Info ‘i’ clickable pop ups, explaining what that particular policy cover is for.

When searching and selecting your favourite policies to compare, you will see these icons listed by the cover offered on that policy. Next to it will either be the amount covered – or if optional cover – a yes/no answer as to whether you can buy this as an ‘add on’.

Cover Type Icon

Abandonment

A benefit payment if you abandon your trip because your departure is delayed for more than 12 hours due to strike, industrial action, adverse weather, mechanical or technical fault.

An amount to cover the accidental loss, theft or damage to your personal possessions whilst on a trip.

Baggage Delay

The cost of replacing essential items, if your baggage has been delayed by more than 12 hours.

Burial or Cremation

Covers the cost of burial or cremation of a deceased Insured person abroad. Alternatively, the cost of repatriation.

Covers accidental loss, theft or damage to business equipment, goods or samples. The cost of a replacement employee. The cost to hire replacement business equipment. The loss or theft of business money.

Cancellation

If a trip has to be cancelled for a variety of reasons, for example death, injury, illness, compulsory quarantine, government evacuation.

Car and Home Excess

Covers the cost of any excess payable on your car or home insurance, following a claim for loss, damage or theft to your home or car, whilst you are on holiday.

A helpline service to assist with all kinds of travel problems, Visas, Vaccinations, currencies, travellers cheques, stolen credit cards, translation services, emergency money, tracing lost luggage.

Cruise

Covers missed port departure, cabin confinement, itinerary change, unused excursions and Cruise Interruption.

Curtailment

If a trip has to be cut short for a variety of reasons, for example death, injury, illness, compulsory quarantine, government evacuation.

Delayed Departure

Emergency Dental Treatment

Covers the cost of necessary temporary treatment or the immediate relief of pain and/or emergency repairs to dentures.

Financial Failure

An amount payable to recover sums paid in advance, in the event your scheduled airline or end supplier of travel arrangements, become insolvent. Some Insurers exclude arrangements forming part of an inclusive holiday.

Gadget Cover

A payment to cover the value or, or repair to gadgets, which are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. Gadgets are items that may not covered under the baggage section of the policy, like Mobiles, Laptops, Sat Nav’s, PDA’s etc.

Golf

Covers accidental loss, theft or damage to your golf equipment. The additional hire of replacement golf equipment, loss of green fees and hole in one.

Hijack/Kidnap

A benefit payment made for unlawful seizure of the conveyance in which you are travelling as a passenger

Hospital Benefit

A benefit payment made for each 24 hours period that you spend in a foreign hospital.

Kennel/Cattery

A payment to cover additional kennel or cattery fees if departure of your return journey is delayed between 12 and 24 hours (depending on the Insurer), as a result of strike, industrial action, adverse weather, mechanical or technical fault. Some Insurers also include cover for illness or injury to a pet whilst you are away.

Legal Expenses

Legal costs, enabling you to pursue a civil action for compensation regarding any incident that results in bodily injury, death or illness, caused by a third party during your journey.

Medical Expenses

To pay emergency medical costs caused by unforeseen events such as accidents, illness or disease.

Missed Departure

A benefit payment to cover reasonable additional accommodation or travel expenses, because of missed departure due to failure or public transport, accident or breakdown of the vehicle you were travelling in, strike, industrial action or adverse weather conditions.

A benefit payment in the event of a violent attack on you, with a view to theft, by person(s) not known to you.

Natural Disaster

An amount payable to cover additional travel expenses, the cost of providing alternative accommodation, to allow you to continue your holiday or journey because of Fire, Flood, Earthquake, storm, lightning, explosion, hurricane or outbreak of an infectious disease. In additional, some Insurers will cover the cancellation or abandonment of your holiday.
