Who are True Traveller Travel Insurance

Review of True Traveller Travel Insurance updated 22nd March 2021: by Jonathan Upton.

The True Traveller was set up in 2010 by three travellers who worked for a well known travel company. As experts in the travel industry, they realised that having a good travel insurance policy was almost as important as the holiday itself. The company specialises in insurance for adventure travellers and backpackers.

True Traveller offer single trip and multi trip policies, for holidays, one way trips and if you are already travelling. There are three levels of cover to choose from True Value, Traveller and Traveller Plus. True Value is aimed at those under 40, backpackers and who have already started their journey. The Traveller policy is aimed at holidaymakers and those seeking adventure, whilst the traveller plus has higher levels of cancellation and enhanced medical cover.

Key Points you need to know about True Traveller's policy wording

Children are classed as anyone aged 18 years or less, in full time education, financially dependent on and normally living with you.

2. What are the policy age limits?

The True Value policy is only available to customers under the age of 40.

The Traveller and Traveller Plus policies are available to customers under the age of 65.

The age limits apply to both single trip and annual multi trip policies.

3. What are the policy Trip Duration limits?

The single trip policy can be taken out for up to 2 years. The policy also allows you to return home for a visit as many times as you like and for as long as you like during the period of insurance, without validating your insurance cover.

The multi trip policy allows you to take an unlimited number of trips throughout the policy year. The true value and traveller policy allow each trip to last up to 30 days. The Traveller plus policy, allows for trips up to 70 days.

4. What is classed as a family and how many people can be quoted for?

The policy allows you to insure up to six persons, adults or children.

5. What are the options for Gadget Cover?

Mobile phones, laptops, tablets etc are included in the definitions of valuables. However the overall limits are low.

You do have the option to specify up to three additional items for £450 each (True Value and Traveller)or £750 each (Traveller Plus), subject to payment of the relevant additional premium.

Settlement of any claim is subject to wear and tear and items must be less than five years old.

6. What are the options for Cruise Cover?

There is no option to include insurance cover for Cruises.

7. What are the options for Winter Sports cover?

Winter Sports can be included as an option on both single trip and annual policies. In respect of annual policies, you are covered for up to 30 days per policy year.

If you elect to pay for the winter sports option, you will be covered for fourteen different winter sport activities, however, it is important that you read the policy wording, as many of the activities come with attached conditions such as the exclusion of liability or accident cover.

8. What is covered under Sports and Activities on the policy?

As mentioned in our introduction, True Traveller specialise in insurance for adventure and activity holidays. They have split sports and adventure activities into four packs Traveller, which is automatically included and covers up to 100 different past times as standard.

There are three paid options Adventure, Extreme and Ultimate. The risk factor of each pack and therefore the cost is greater as you up the packs, with Ultimate covering activities like mountaineering up to 6,000 metres or tandem skydiving.

It's important that you read the policy wording and check to make sure that a. You are covered for the activity you plan in taking part in and b. That you are aware of any attached exclusions and that you comply with any additional terms and conditions.

9. Will I be covered if I want to do Manual Work or Bar Work or other work while I am on holiday?

You are automatically covered for non manual work, described as professional, clerical or administrative work or working as a classroom teacher, classroom assistant, au pair, child-minder, bar and restaurant work.

If you purchase the Adventure pack, you would also be covered for Permitted Manual work described as general farm work and fruit picking. This includes driving tractors and other similar farm vehicles so long as you comply with any appropriate license requirements; doctor, nurse, midwife and care work (including medical elective trips but not dental elective); light building and DIY e.g. painting, decorating or basic construction work using light power tools only. Permitted  Manual  Work is not covered if it involves the use of plant/trade/industrial machinery, non-domestic power tools or working at a height of over 2 metres.

Cover also extends to volunteering described as your participation in community or wildlife based conservation/project work when arranged by a professional organisation.  This may include caring, teaching or nursing.  It may also cover community/ charity based supervised building/renovation projects or other Permitted Manual Work, provided the activity  does  not  involve  the  use  of  plant/trade/industrial  machinery,  non-domestic  power  tools  or working at a height of over 2 metres.

10. What are the policy rules on reciprocal health agreements (EHIC, Medicare)?

The EHIC card is recommended by True Traveller, so that you can participate in any reciprocal arrangements with other European Union countries.

Similarly, if you are visiting Australia and need medical treatment, you should enrol in the Medicare scheme, so that you are able to also take advantage of reciprocal medical arrangements.

11. Does the policy cover Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and can I get a quote online?

If you need to answer yes to the following questions, you will need to declare medical conditions. Unfortunately, you are unable to obtain a quote online and must phone the True Traveller medical screening helpline.

  1. You have, in the last two years, suffered from any medical or psychological conditions and for which you've received treatment, been prescribed medication, or attended any consultations, investigations, or check-ups.
  2. You have ever suffered from or received treatment, investigations or test for heart attack, angina, chest pain, any other heart condition, any form of stoke, mini-stroke or brain haemorrhage.

There is a list of conditions which are automatically included, without the need to phone the help line. These are listed in the policy. They do however included Type 1 and 2 Diabetes, providing you were diagnosed over 12 months ago; have no eye, kidney, nerve, or vascular complications; do not also suffer from a known Cardiovascular Disease, Hypertension, Hyperlipidaemia, or Hypercholesterolaemia; and are under the age of 60 on the date you buy the policy (type 1)

providing that you were diagnosed over 12 months ago; and have no eye, kidney, nerve, or vascular complications (type 2).

12. What are the policy rules on travelling when pregnant?

The policy does not cover medical expenses that relate to normal pregnancy or childbirth. The Insurer does however cover you should complications arise with your pregnancy due to  accidental bodily injury or unexpected illness which occurs while on your trip excluding costs incurred during the period between 12 weeks before and 12 weeks after the estimated date of delivery.

13. What are the policy Alcohol Exclusion terms?

The policy excludes claims related to the intake of alcohol, however the policy does provide reasonable guidance. It states they do not expect you to avoid drinking alcohol, but will not cover you for drinking so much, that your judgement is seriously affected and you need to make a claim as a result.

14. Does the policy cover Scheduled Airline Failure or Financial Failure?

Traveller and Traveller Plus policies include automatic cover against Financial Failure of suppliers, including scheduled airlines.

15. Does the policy cover natural disaster or catastrophe before and during my holiday?

None of the three policies covers natural disaster or catastrophe, however there is a paid option to include cover for additional expenses  if upon your scheduled return to your Country of Residence, you are delayed for more than 24-hours beyond the time of international departure shown on your itinerary for reasons beyond your control.

16. What are the requirements, if I need to claim for lost, damaged or stolen baggage?

If you need to claim for lost, damaged or stolen baggage, remember that for any item over £100, you will be required to provide receipts, or other proof of ownership, such as credit card or bank statements, and photographs of yourself wearing the item.

Remember that the baggage section is not automatically included and you need to add this section during the quotation process.

17. What does the policy cover in the event of war, terrorism or cyber attack?

The policy excludes any claims (including medical expenses) caused by terrorist activity.

18. Do I have to be a UK resident to be covered under this policy?

Cover is available to permanent residents or citizens of the European Economic Area, The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. You are required to have a permanent residential address and unrestricted right of entry to your country of residence.

19. What about the Policy Wording?

The True Traveller policy is 32 pages long. It is well laid out, a great index, table of contents and important contact numbers all at the front of the document and very clearly labelled.

For the most part, I found it easy to follow and understand.

20. What do reviews from customers say?

True Traveller have an excellent five star rating on trust pilot. In fact many of the top reviews are about how well and quickly claims have been settled by the company, which is great to see. True Traveller get top marks for service.

21. Are they on Comparison sites such as Confused.com or CompareTheMarket.com?

True Traveller are not on comparison websites, preferring to deal with customer direct and it appears to be successful.

22. Overall Summary

True Traveller provide a mid range of policies, aimed at anyone living in the European Union and not just the UK, and specifically at those who are planning a more adventurous or longer term holiday.

Whilst the levels of cover may not be as high as some of the competition, they are clearly providing value for money and it appears excellent customer service to go along with that.

They will also provide cover if you have already left on your trip, useful if you have forgotten travel insurance.
